Air recirc

Featured Replies

The other day the air recirculation was turning itself on. Id turn it off but it was back on within about 5 seconds (which i didnt realise at first and was telling my passenger off for turning it on all the time!) hahaa

Its now not turning off at all - no matter how many times i press the button!

I've tried all the other dials in other positions and also different gears (i read that it could be something to do with the reverse switch?)

Any ideas guys?

Cheers

Sounds like another one of the common problems with the fabia's ventilation system.

Firstly get vagcom on it and scan for faults - most likely that the fault will show up there.

next clear the fault,  then perform the recirc fan adaptation on vagcom.

Then pray that fixes it.

if the recirc problem comes back (and it's likely it will),  then it's likely to be needing a replacement flap motor.

U could try dismanatling the existing motor unit and cleaning up the contacts inside first.

There's some decent guides on here,  someone did one recently for the temperature motor unit,   which is basically the same principle as the recirc motor unit.

They are closely placed.

The only thing about the recirc motor is that make sure u put the gears and flaps back in the correct position when u refit everything.  It took me ages of flaffing around when I refitted mine when it went wrong like yours did.

Thanks for the reply! :)

I'd looked about but couldnt see much suggesting it was a common problem.

Sounds like this could be a ball ache though!

If i was happy to do without (as tbh i cant honestly say iv used recirc for anything other than driving past smelly farmers fields!) could i not just disable to recirc somehow?

I'll get vagcom on it ASAP though as im having to have A/C on permanently to stop windows misting up :/

I'm sure u could just disconnect the motor wire and be done with it if u didn't want the recirc function.

In the fabia the recirc comes on automatically whenever u select reverse gear,  which is probably why they eventually fail as it's being used so god damn often over its lift span.

I had mine replaced by skoda when it was still under warrenty,  but it always always made a clunk noise after they replaced the motor...  turns out the clunking noise was because they had mis-aligned the flaps that block the outside air from coming into the cabin.    Took me ages of trial and error to finally get the correct position between the flaps/cogs and recirc motor.

My suggestion is get a camera phone up inside and video the movement first,  and have something to refer back to if and when u need to dismantle the motor from the car.

Thanks for the advise

Im thinking that this may be beyond me though lol ..and I dont like using garages!

Iv just noticed the temperature recently and the mpg has dropped - i think the air con is turning its self on as well, except it isnt turning the light on like the recirc has

i can see myself parting with a fair bit of money here! :(

All the faults could be linked, with recirculation on I believe that AC is applied automatically to stop the car steaming up.

You cannot just disconnect the wire from the motor as its most likely stuck in the wrong position. Should you do this then the car will forever be steaming up as no fresh air is entering the cabin. My Audi has a stuck recirculation flap, but luckily its stuck in the fresh air position and not the other way round.

Funny enough, mine did this end of last year...I ordered the new part but before I could get it fixed, it resolved itself and has behaved since!!

I hope this resolves itself!

Thanks for the replies guys

Im actually wanting the aircon to be a fault too - its unlikely 2 things will go faulty so it might be a simple electrical problem causing both

I'm going to bite the bullet and take it to a garage i think - theres an indi near me that specialise in vag cars :)

Put it into a garage to get vagcom on it and they confirmed that the recirc flap is stuck

Could be seized/broken or it could have something blocking it - either way, its 3 hours work + the part!

Off looking about i think im going to give it a go sorting it myself - i've read that its an easy enough job, its just time consuming (and skin on hands and arms consuming) and a bit awkward

Any pointers anyone would give for doing this?

Also, can you confirm that the car is totally drivable if i were to take it out and leave it out for a few days while i source a new one?

Cheers

Sounds as though there was something blocking it that got dislodged then? ..lucky bugger! haha

3hrs takes the pi$$$$.

Garage could probably do it in under one hour if they were experienced.   Sounds like garage knows this sorta job is a PITA and doesn't wanna know! LOL

It took me probably 3hrs of flaffing about,  mainly because

a) I'm pretty useless at this sorta stuff

B) I've never done it before, so kinda learning as I went along

c) I wish I'd taken a photo of the position of the two flaps and the cogs/motor position BEFORE dismantling everything......

I probably spent the best part of an hour just using trial and error getting the 2 flaps and cogs in the correct position so it all worked as it was intended to.

Funnily enough, after I'd done all the work,  it was better than Skoda dealer left it.   It ALWAYS used to clonk/click everytime the recirc operated.  This was because the dealer had fitted the flaps and cogs at the wrong positions,  so when the flaps opened fully,  the motor still carried on turning,  so u got the clonking/clicking noise as everything started binding up/creaking past end stops....   fricken cowboy mechanics!

The garage is a really good one though - it must just be the chew on putting them off

Am i right thinking i'll need to take it to someone with vagcom to calibrate it onces fitted?

Thanks though bud

I'm pretty sure u do need vagcom afterwards yes.  I certainly had to.

The stupid system needs to be put into a learning mode for it to work out where full open and fully closed positions are.

this'll be fun then ...garage does diagnostics and i take the car back ..now i'll go back for them to finish the job off hahaa

cheers

Just an update for if anyone comes across this in future..

I get a replacement flap motor to fit from a guy breaking a fabia

Took my glove box out and then turned the car on to look how it all works before i started pulling it apart

..then realised it was working fine!!!  left the glove box out a few days to check it and just refitted it yesterday

I can only assume there was something stuck in it which i dislodged

RE: steaming up, your rear carpets wet?

Not that i've ever noticed mate

Unless im going to work 99% of my driving is to/from the gym, climbing wall or cycling though - so if the weather suits it the car will steam up easily with me in it lol
