Temporary Cover

Featured Replies

I need temporary cover on my gf's car next weekend. Have rung my insurance Adrian Flux who quoted £99 and rang hers who said it had to be on a permanent basis. Is there any good insurers who offer it cheeper? Have seen the ones on Google but I'm a bit skeptical.

J360TD,

Did she get a quote on you going on the insurance as a named driver for the rest of the term of her cover ?

Is that what the £99 is, to put you on.

If it is a private car, ( not for Hire, Courtesy Car etc, ) it is for the Policy Holder, your G/F to insure additional Drivers,

not drivers to insure themself to drive the car.

Any claim if there was an incident would be for her to make.

If you do not own the car,

you might be able with your own cars Policy to be covered to drive the other car 3rd Party or even Fully comp,

but being a named Driver on her policy seems the best way to go.

if its just for a day or two then look at dayinsure.com

used them myself a few times without any hassle.

Is that to insure a private car owned and insured by somebody else ?

EDIT,

i see it is, thanks for that link.

They do both :)

Yes indeed, it covers that as that is the sites main purpose. You cannot insure a car that has no insurance, its in addition to the existing policy.

Are you too young to just drive on 3rd party basis?

I am but not sure who you were referring to

Referring to the OP.  Normally 3rd party is granted the first time you renew after being 25, so you've probably not got long to wait.  It's nice to be able to drive anything else with permission. :)

what do you mean by that.

First part of UK Insurance for the Public Highway is 3rd party Cover, that is the Owner Insuring a vehicle.

Individual, or Group / Company.

So the Car is Insured, the Second part is who is insured to drive, So the Owner, Nameds, or Group or Fleet, cover  etc, or various drivers with the correct licence.

So basically you Insure a Car, thats needed to have VED on the car.  Then Drivers are Insured.

With a Private car, it is Normally just all as One, Insure Car, you Are Registered Keeper - Owner, then you name Drivers.

Group Cover at Dealerships is for the Vehicles, or Hire Cars, then the Driver Borrowing or Hiring can get Cover for the Loan Period.

But someone can not Insure the Vehicle just for the Day, they can Insure them self to drive it for a day though.

The Insurance Company that insure the Vehicle for the Public Highway can say no other Drivers.

ie.

Motability Lease Vehicles, the Insurance only covers Named Drivers.

Obviously Dealership Drivers can Drive them for Servicing etc.

Then there are the likes of SAGA Insurance, where in a Medical Emergency a none named driver can have Full Comprehensive Cover to drive

the Named Drivers.

I know all that but you said you cant insure a car that has no insurance.

The 1 day insurance covers the car as well as the driver for 1 day.

So if you buy a car that has MOT and no VED you should be able to Tax it and drive it home.

And you may also be buying a car that has Tax but no insurance because the seller has just swap over to another car or cancelled as soon as you pick it up.

From October, when you buy a car, the current VED becomes Void, and you will have to Insure a vehicle and pay the VED before taking it away.

Or that is how their theory looks at the present.  It will be interesting to see how it does actually work out.

No way should you be able to drive a vehicle home that has no MOT, even though you can drive vehicles without MOT's to a Prearranged booked Test.

If the Vehicle is Roadworthy & fit to be tested, the seller can get that test before the car is collected.

(i know that is dreaming.)

The whole set up of a car on SORN, no longer being on SORN as soon as it gets a new Keeper is a PITY, as is the whole process of getting

Registered Keeper Changed when you need to get Tax Class Changed or just buy the VED.

Online, Phone and Mail is just not sorted out, and without Local DVLA offices, its back to using Post Offices where you can.

(If only people had thought of that quicker, and stopped the Governments move to everything being online eventually.)
