Only revs to 2500

Featured Replies

So, if it's not embarrassing enough to be the only Estate, the only Diesel AND the only Skoda in the queue for a noise test on a Brands Hatch trackday yesterday, the bloke then thought I was winding him up when asked to rev it.

It turns out that when you're not moving, the car will only rev to about 2500? I assume this is intentional haha but it took me by surprise!

Yes, it's intentional.

Yep it's intentional to stop tits ruining the engine.

If you turn the ASR off you'll probably find you can then rev it as hard as you like. The rev limit does seem to be instated by the ESP module.

good thinking I'll give that a try next time. as it was, the guy just shrugged and gave me a pass sticker anyway lol.

The diesels make hardly any sound even at full revs, just a grumble... certainly ain't getting any burbles and blasts out of the exhaust!

How was the track day?

Track day in diesel octavia. Hmmmmm nothing better to take ?

It seems quiet common these days for this to be the case.

Probably also to stop 80 year old Dorris down the road from setting off by bouncing off the rev limiter (seen it happen!)

I don't see the issue! :dull:

Really? It's a dull boring family car. Which it's exceptional at. Track day toy it is not!

But you're missing the point...

He wasn't going on a track day to be the fastest and set any records... it was a bit of fun which is the whole point of these cars.

Not mega fast etc but decent handling and a bit of power under the bonnet. Enough to have fun... do you know what that is?

Our forum creator Colin took his 75bhp Citigo round Blyton park last week!

Phil

I am clearly not missing the point. Owning a mk1 mx5 and doing track days in it. Not fast but certainly fun

A diesel FWD skoda is not fun in any situation. Especially not a track day. Get over it.

I'd challenge, you don't know how to have fun if you think a bloody ocatvia is just that.

I assure you skoda design brief for the octi wasn't a bit of fun.

I have to agree. As a family saloon/estate it's a good car. Will it set your pants alight?   er...... not likely (not even in vRS trim).

Stuski's posts were a little strong but im inclined to agree a diesel car doesnt typically make for a good track car. Short narrow powerband and gearing the main reasons in my book.

Still a TSi vRS wouldnt be so bad, particularly if APR/Revo'd, maybe some suspension work. Probably struggle a little on a tight track without a proper diff but still potential to be fun if not necessarily the quickest track day motor.

Personally wouldnt be all that keen to take my daily drive on a track day; the inconvenience of crashing it/breaking it or wearing bits out would not be ideal..neither would the risk of losing the cars warranty if by some freak occurence the dealership came to know about it being used on track.

Some strange posts above, i had never done a trackday before and i had the time of my life. Apart from a Toyota supra thingy I was the fastest car on track lol

Albeit it was a novice session and the standard of driving was terrible. I went past a caterham a Porsche and a 6litre Mercedes all being driven by my gran I think. Didnt get overtaken once in any of the 3 sessions.

The circuit was ideal for the car, all in 3rd and 4th gears which is exactly where the 184's power is (plus tuning box)

Expensive though, not so much the trackday itself but the approx 2-3mm it took off the tyres.

I think some of the judgement on the OP's car choice is a bit harsh.

We all know the vRS diesel is not a zippy wee sports car, but it doesn't have to be to get around a track. I'll bet it can do it reasonably well too,I recall there was an octy diesel nurburgring video on YouTube that certainly didn't look boring.

If the op enjoyed it then good on him.

Back on topic I have noticed the 2500 limit, can anyone confirm that disabling esp allows it to be revved?

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on that point then.

Even in my slower 1.9 TDI I can have fun. Might not be as 'fun' as an MX5 but we can't all afford to run a track day car.

Phil

Ok saying any fun is a bit strong. Fun can be had in the crappiest of hire and courtesy cars. But let's not get all rose tinted and say it's a good choice for a track car or even a "fun" car.

My skoda is probably quicker than my mx5 in a straight line, does not mean it's fun in anyway.

Like saying a super focused track car is great to transport your wife kids and dog on a two hundred mile round trip. It's not but it will do a job.

If I sounded hostile I didn't mean it. :)

Sorry to derail the thread. Was the same on the golf I had. But if you dipped the clutch then you could rev to your hearts content. All 5k of it :)

Totally agree with you, Phil.

I tracked my MkI Fabia PD100 at Combe and although not the fastest, it was bloody good fun :)

You don't need an MX5 etc to have fun.

:wait: Gentlemen, time please.

You're both right, just on different parts of the curve (but the same curve mind!). :hi:

Edit: Sorry that "quote" of Stuski's post didn't quite go right, but the sentiment's the same!
