Cold Engine issue

Featured Replies

Hi guys

I own a 2005 Skoda Octavia 1.6 petrol engine and have had it since last November. When started from cold I have noticed that the engine revs sit at around 1000rpm (auto choke) but this can vary up to 1500rpm when I start to take off from standing and can wobble right down to 500 rpm and feels like the car is going to stall. I have actually stalled it a couple of times due to this erratic idling from cold. I have had a garage look at it but no fault codes have been reported. Once the engine is warm there are no further problems. Anyone got any ideas for a solution?

Thanks

Fred.

It's tricky with no fault codes, but it does make me think of an intermittent air leak (so check the smaller crankcase vent pipes very carefully by hand; there's at least one that can crack and can only be detected by hand, and some of the externally fabric armoured ones can collapse internally and look ok until they feel squidgy), or an issue with the cold enrichment or idle stabilisation valve.

Thanks for your help Ken. There is no Haynes manual for my version of the Octavia so unsure where those pipes you are referring to are located. I have considered taking the car to my local Skoda garage for further investigation but this could lead to a runaway bill I believe as they haven't been able to diagnose what could be causing this when i have spoken with them.

Does it have fresh spark plugs in with the correct gap and a fresh air filter ?

& do you use some Supermarket 95 ron fuel that the car might not like,

& have you tried using a different brand of fuel, just in case?

Hi George

The car was fully serviced (major service) when I purchased the car last November at a reputable garage so I can only assume that all of those items you mentioned were covered. I have had the very same garage look in detail at this problem but they could not find anything to be the cause. No error codes have been found. I do use supermarket petrol but have not tried another brand. Do you recommend a particular brand?

Just use someplace else and some other brand of Fuel, , they are much alike, but some people notice differences. Not saying that Shell or BP makes a Difference.

Maybe stick in Tesco Momentum 99 for a Tank Full, it might be worth the extra £3.00

As to the Car being Serviced and assuming, then you might need someone to remove and check the Spark Plugs unless you have a Invoice For Spark Plugs,

but then they still need checked and maybe changed.

Same with the Air Filter, if you can open the Filter Housing and see if the Air Filter is Clean, then best do that,

or have someone do it for you.

Not the Place that so far can not find an issue because the Diagnostic Machine says 'no fault codes'.

Hi George could you maybe clarify your last paragraph as it isn't making a lot of sense to me. Thanks

Sorry,

what i mean is do not trust the reputable place,  best check the Air Filter and Spark Plugs or someone fresh check them.

There are actually places that Stamp Service Books and do not always do what should be done,

or just employees that might.

It is nice to know, and checking an Air Filter to see how it looks is an easy check.

Thanks George

I will try and get at the air filter when I get a chance and see how it looks. The car is due a service in 3 months time so I will pay particular attention to what is done and how it performs following that too.
