Skoda octavia 1.9TDI DSG and VW 1.6 DIESEL Golf DSG

Hi,i was talking to a VW mechanic today and he told me that the VW 1.6 diesel golf DSG has the same  gearbox as the skoda octavia 1.9TDI DSG,[6 speed of course]he said if i need to replace the gearbox either one will fit each other,just need a second opinion.

If it fits can't tell you but can tell you that the 1.6 uses a 7 speed DSG

ideally you should check your gearbox code on the data sticker of your car

 

If you need a replacement stick with that code

Your mechanic is wrong. The 1.6 diesels across the VAG range have a 7 speed dry clutch DSG, while the 1.9 diesel gets the (superior) 6 speed DSG.

I doubt they are interchangeable.

The 1.6tdi only came out on late 2009 models. Your friends octavia has the same 1.9 tdi with 105 hp.

And i do believe that the 1.6 came out first on the octavia and only in 2010 on the golf

yes you could do that 6sp =6sp.  Good luck with substituting the 6sp dsg with the 7 speed dsg or vice-versa.  I think they are physically different in size & certainly the mechanical philosophy behind each one is a bit different so the computer side of things would need some jiggery-pokery as well.

1.6 definitely just comes with the 7 speed gearbox.

 

1.9 definitely just comes with the 6 speed gearbox.

Well it was changed over anyway,all i know is what he told me,he said the gearbox came from a 09 golf tdi which has the same gearbox as the octavia,and it fitted like a glove,it was a 6 speed dsg gearbox from the golf and put into a skoda Octavia 1.9TDI.i did research a bit more about the change over ,i rang a VW garage,a girl i know there is one of the senior reps there,i asked her to get one of their VW mechanics on the phone to me,i asked him was it possible to put a 6spDSG gearbox into a skoda octavia 1.9TDI 6 sp DSG and his answer was yes,boot engines were very close and gearboxes were the same,a few little adjustments on them but they would fit

Yes, absolutely. The Golf in question would have been a 1.9 TDI. Your original question was about interchanging a DSG from a 1.6 TDI Golf into a 1.9 TDI Octavia, which is absolutely not possible.

Sorry lads ,maybe i took it up wrong,maybe it was a 1.9TDI golf and not a 1.6  as i stated earlier,i will be seeing him on Monday and i will get the full facts off him,

VAG fit the 7 speed on any car up to 184lb/ft or 250nm (i think) torque output as this is the OEM limit of the DQ200 dry clutch box.

The 1.9 TDi's were always 6 speed DQ250's as the 200 box didnt exist until the launch of the (I believe but dont quote me) 1.6 CR.

The 7 speed box is better because it can offer 6 well spread ratios rather than just 5 + overdrive and is more efficient but by its very nature (that the clutch plates arent swimming around in oil) it does suffer some low speed smoothness and unreliability.

Ive had both and overall preferred the 6 speed but IMHO DSG does mate much better with petrol engines than it does on diesels. I found the DSG on the diesel exaggerated the cars soft low speed response and turbo lag, something you can drive around in a manual version.

And agree with other comments cant imagine you could interchange a 7 speed box with a 6.

I'd agree with you, if it wasn't for the poor reliability record of the 7 speed DSG. If you have a 1.8 TSI with the 7 speed DSG, it's almost guaranteed to fail at some point.

Is it only the combination of 1.8 tsi and 7 dsg that's almost g'teed to fail, whereas dsg failures of other combinations are within acceptable and reasonable limits. If so I shall get in touch with SkodaUK (and  VAG) to put them on notice that I'm very concerned about this design failure, and that I expect the dsg warranty to be extended to at least 7 years.

Hi Lads and ladies,havent been on this site for a while,with work,family and life just didnt get the time,anyway going back to the change over from the 1.9TDI DSG golf to the Skoda octavia 1.9TDI DSG gearbox,well it was a success,only problem he found with the change over was when he was taking off with a warm engine,the skoda would jump forward into gear,he told me it was something to do with the skoda computer not accepting the new gearbox,even though his machanic put the cumputer asleep on the change over,maybe you top men could throw some light on this.

He also said it was like a time delay when it was engaged into gear,causing it to jump forward,he said if he put the gear shift into neutral and then put it back into drive it would take off ok,any ideas lads
