The Driving section of yesterday's (10/08/2014) Sunday Times replied to a reader concerned abour premature failure of the 1.4TSI engine.

The reply suggested that the 1.4TSI 120 bhp was fitted with a turbo only and was OK whilst higher powered 1.4TSI used a supercharger and turbo and were prone to early failure.

Notwithstanding that mine is a 1.4 TSI 140bhp; what's this all about please and need we be worried?

You sure it was referring to the latest 1.4 TSI and not the older ones?

Ian, I think you got slightly crossed info, the 122 bhp unit is fitted in the MK2 octy's, the 180 bhp is fitted in the Fabia MK2 vRS and our unit is the 140 bhp fitted in the MK3 octy's.

This user #9 icon_share.pngaustenw90 the Fabia MK2 vRS with an engine prone to early failure nd indeed had his replaced by SUK after many requests with Director level.  Also see this link http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/294051-cave-cthe-14tsi-just-reply-please-if-you-have-had-an-engine-replaced/?hl=%20vrs%20%20engine

Nothing I've heard of as yet on the MK3 octy's

BTW. Mine goes like a rocket when asked to but does use loads of petrol like this however, when the cruise control is set at legal limits I can get 50 mpg on a run although, I don't do this too often hence, my high fuel consumption figures.

The article made clear that there are 2 "versions" of the 1.4 Tsi - the old twincharger and the latest turbo only version. They then clouded the issue by referring to 120 bhp and implying that the latest 1.4 fitted to the Octavia has active cylinder management which it does not. But the thrust of their reply to the readers query is correct - its the old twincharger that has the dubious reputation. The new version appears ok (thus far).

VAG stupidly used the same name for both engines despite them being totally different. Confusion over this will run and run.

The Fabia Mk2 vRS from 2010 - 2012 with the 1.4 TSI Twincharger 180 ps CAVE Engine sold 1,800 in the UK,

A few hundred engines have now failed and been replaced, and some replacement engines have failed.

In 2012 the Engine & Engine Management was revised and that is the CTHE engine, & only a few of the near 1,200 sold have failed,

and they were the earliest 2012-2013 ones.

The newer 1.4 TSI 180 ps Minimum CTHE Engine is still in cars being sold new, the Fabia vRS and the Seat Ibiza Cupra.

The engines with Turbo only has not had the same issues and is not made of Chocolate.

Even the lower power Twinchargers like in the Ibiza FR 150 ps have been pretty reliable. (Same engine, different MAP.)

This article will give you some idea of the previous Engine Codes for 1.4 TSI /TFSI

The 1.2 and 1.4 TSI in the Octavia III are a totally new generation of engine (EA211) built by Skoda at their main plant in Malda Boleslav.

The older VW manufactured EA111 is the engine mentioned in the article and as others have stated the small output Turbo only 120 is a fairly reliable lump.
