Pulling images and Backgrounds from a website...

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

My company have got me doing all sorts of bits n bobs at the moment and one of my tasks is to re-design our website as it is poor at best!

Now, we have an external company that currently do this but they are looking to move away from them and have me look after it...that's fine but I have no formal courses in web design etc and need your help...

Obviously, I/we do not want the current company to know what the plans are so I am copying what I can off the site to use on the new one (imagery and logos, text etc) but I need to know how to copy/use the current background image - any ideas?

Rob

If you have the password for the web server, you can ftp all the data. Also, many web tools can import a website.

Do you own all the images on the website? If there are stock images, you may not have rights to use them on a new website.

Yes, they have been designed just for us...

I do have the admin login details, it's a wordpress site.

Where would I find the imagery files?

After you log into the web server using ftp, you will see a list of files/folders just like Windows Explorer. Just copy everything to your local disk.

Ah ok, will take a look!

Thanks

You could try just right clicking on the image and selecting "Save image as..." which will work as long as the website coding allows a right click.

Cool, I have found the background images that I need but there is no option to do a bulk export  :dull:

Thanks for that Manny but that was the very first thing I tried  :nerd:

What browser are you using, you can save - even protected images - using Firefox .

Tools/ Page Info

NoScript add on for Firefox will let you disable the java script on a site that tried to stop you right click saving images.

Or have a search around for site cloning tools. All websites need to be downloaded before viewing so it's all there on your disk...somewhere.

But mainly unless you ahve a contract that stipulate the designer has copyright over the site it belongs to your company and you should be able just to ask for a copy of all content and images.

Personally I would check to see what the copyright position of the website you are trying to clone is. If the company were contracted by your company to create it, then it is highly likely that they will retain IP rights over the content (unless specifically stated otherwise).

Last thing you want is to get into a copyright battle which will only cost you more money in the long run.

Yup, you need to check the original contract first for who owns the ip.

As others have said, you'll need to be careful on copyright, but I wouldn't worry too much about reusing existing content - if the page is as shoddy as it sounds, just start from scratch.

Consider using something like Drupal as a framework for your new site.

https://www.drupal.org/

You'll find plenty of hosting companies will make the installation really simple, then you need a template - either free or paid for - that you can tailor for your own needs.
The end results can be very good with a little time and attention.

Drupal is a bit of a pain for a non techie. A tweaked Wordpress may be easier.

It can't be that hard. Our marketing department managed to use it.

I would use a site cloning tool. Used them in the past and it really does take the lot!

If the site was designed for you by another company. Can you not simply ask them for the images and code?
