fuel additive

Featured Replies

Has anyone used a fuel additive in a vrs other than the stuff thats in the v power.

I just would not.

Better to just run 95 ron & use as it is, rather than add Octane Boosters,

that is if you can not get the recommended 98 ron or higher octane.  (or 97 ron)  JMO.

Shell V-Power & Tesco Momentum 99 are proper 99 ron minimum, and then have Additives.

Esso Super Unleaded, BP Ultimate, Sainsbury Super unleaded in the UK are 97 ron minimum. (& again maybe have Detergent Additives.)

I have used some supposed octane booster additive before as there isn't any proper Petrol above 95 RON in Ireland available. Not sure it made too much difference, but I wasn't convinced it was doing any good either. Could have just been me but I thought my oil usage went up a bit when running the booster so I switched to using E5 instead (which seemed to eventually cause a misfire) so am now back on standard 95 to see how it goes and so far so good.

Have used an injector cleaner once but that was a one off to try clear the misfire. Generally it seems to be the opinion to stay clear of them unless absolutely necessary

Im not on about octane booster guys, the car will only be run on v power nitro but i was wondering if the is a one off treatment that will give the injectors etc a good clean out.

I've got a hunch that Shell V-Power Nitro stuff is a bit less than 99 ron, I use it all the time in wife's Polo 1.4 75PS originally because it stopped pinking (due to oil separator problem) but it gives the car a lot more grunt at lowish engine speed - I'm sure that it is only 97 or at most 98 ron.

If it is not 99 ron then you are being defrauded, it says 99 ron on the pumps.

you are paying Duty & Tax on the product you purchase, and if they say Minimum 99 ron (or what ever MON) then that

must be the energy that the fuel produces.

But then you need to decide if you want the Secret Additives / Detergents that Shell say you get with the fuels of 99 Octane.

& do they do your engine good or not.

& is it worth 5 pence a Litre more than the Tesco Momentum 99 that is the same Octane and has the Additives they decided to use as Engine lubricants, & Cleaners /Detergents. (That will be Sodium as well.)

From Wikipedia Shell V-Power entry:

In the United Kingdom and Denmark (where Super Unleaded must be a minimum of 97 RON), V-Power has a rating of 99 RON (whereas V-Power's predecessor Shell Optimax was rated at 98 RON).[1] There is one other 99 RON fuel available in the UK, namely Tesco MOMENTUM99.[2]

Am I reading this right?  Is this saying the fuel D (Shell 99?) was much better and standard Tesco was almost as good?

Four different fuels were tested in this programme: a competitor’s forecourt standard 95RON gasoline (Fuel A), Tesco’s forecourt standard 95RON gasoline (Fuel B), Tesco’s "Momentum 99" premium 99RON gasoline (Fuel C) and a competitor’s premium 99RON gasoline (Fuel D).

8. Audi TT:

o On Fuel A, the Audi TT showed a fuel consumption of 9.148 l/100km.

o Using Fuel B, the TT showed a fuel consumption of 9.005 l/100km, a statistically significant decrease of 1.57% on Fuel A.

o Using Fuel C, the TT showed a fuel consumption of 8.884 l/100km, a statistically significant decrease of 1.34% on Fuel B.

o Using Fuel D, the TT showed a fuel consumption of 8.587 l/100km, a statistically significant decrease of 3.35% on Fuel C

Yes, take her to a track day of your choice. You can experiment with fuel additives but without in depth fuel chemistry knowledge you'd be almost certain to ruin your engine. I used play with two stroke karting fuel to good effect. It is black art as in one case the mixture was so potent that due to gearbox failure and overreving steel conrod melted. Compression and torque were epic though ! :)
