Fabia 1.4 TDI 70 gearbox failure

Featured Replies

Had to have my 56 plate 157K miles 1.4TDI 70 towed home today with what appears to be a collapsed bearing in the gearbox. Think its the 02T box, are there any known problems such as the ones that the Octavia SDI boxes had.

I've got a 54 plate PD 75 at just over 85k which has a worn input shaft bearing so I'm getting the gearbox rebuilt. My gearbox code is GGV, not sure if it's a common problem or not. Did you notice any whining or other sounds prior to this incident?

Gearbox is HCS, had a little noise at tickover but if I depressed cluch and selected a gear the noise disappeared suggesting the problem was with the input shaft as selecting a gear would probably stop the input shaft rotating (freewheeling) as the stationary output shaft would bring it down to no rotation. Did you pull your own box out, and if so is it an easy job for on a drive. Noticed that someone on Ebay sells 02T rebuild kits but mine sounds past that so may be a used box required.

Similar symptoms to mine then although mine rumbles in 4th and whines in pretty much all other gears - especially at just over 2000rpm.

I don't have any tools for working on a car or a driveway so I've got it booked in for a full rebuild with Slaters Garage in Nottingham, I'm also getting the 5th gear swapped out for a longer one (Darkside kit) so it doesn't rev quite so high at motorway speeds. I'll let you know how the rebuild goes when it's done but it won't be until around 17th September.

Managed to find a 18,000 mile HCS gearbox from a rear end damaged Polo, but due to rarety it cost me £350, and had that fitted with a new clutch (strangely 220mm diameter where most higher powered Fabias appear to be 215mm or smaller) so car is good for another 150,000 miles.

Whoops forgot to update this, got mine rebuilt and it's all okay now
