1 Month on, thoughts, questions and so on

Featured Replies

OK, so I've had my O3 now for coming up to 1 month and I've got a few questions, comments and opinions. It's a UK Octavia 2.0TDI Elegance with the Winter Pack should anyone need to ask.

To start, I love my new car, it's by far the nicest car I've ever owned and for the money it's a bargain (I'm so glad I didn't go for the Seat Leon FR). The 2.0 diesel is fantastic, it pulls well, has great pace and I get pretty good MPG out of it, I tend to only push the engine on a couple of short points on my journey to work, otherwise it's cruise control all the way. That's another feature I can't believe I managed to live without on my old car (a 2010 Kia Cee'd 1). As a result brim to brim I'm getting 51mpg on average and I'm going to gun for 55+ in the coming weeks.

I keep finding new features on it every time I use it and I quite like that, just little things like the bins where the spare wheel would be as in most cars I've looked at this is usually a couple of small cubbies and a tyre inflation kit. The Octavia seems to have a cavern in addition to the boot the size of Kuwait. I also quite like the ability to set navigation from the steering wheel, I'll hardly use it but it's nice to be able to do it without taking my hands off the wheel. When I ordered, I planned to use a 128gb SD card and I'm happy to report that my entire music collection (minus a few bits) plays nice on the Amundsen, I did worry that things might not work without a bit of a fight but it plays everything in my collection and loads up pretty much instantly. I will be adding my audio books with a cheap 32gb USB SanDisk Cruzer Ultra Fit that I picked up for just over £10 today so I'll be back in a few days hopefully to post how that looks for anyone who might be curious about getting a small form factor USB for their car.

Another thing I cannot get enough of is the heated seats, even now in summer. My mother has an Insignia with the heated seats and I always thought it felt like you had wet yourself. The Octavia seems to me that it feels less like this and a more enjoyable experience. I cannot wait for winter now, as I hated waiting at work when I escape at 2am having to scrape the ice off the car and then get in and find the car still barely puffing out luke warm air. I'll be nice and toasty while the heated screen does it's thing.

Some things I've been thinking about are adding QI charging, as I have a Nexus 5 and charge this up all the time, has anyone managed to get one into the car in a convenient way? I was looking at putting one in the phone holder tray but the only way I can see to do it is with an unsightly cable coming out of through the lid, I've not been able to find a USB cable that would look suitable and even then it would mean it has to go into the tray from the front side and look a bit silly . Even mounting on top of the phone holder tray I can't come up with a solution. Is there a way of getting a cable from the fusebox into the phone box that anyone has tried as I can't find any way to do it.

I was looking at This to do the job but the issue is routing a usb cable in a reasonably neat way. I don't mind that it wont look factory fit but just can't seem to find a way to do it suitably.

After washing my car for the second time since new, I read the manual to check the tyre pressures, put the wipers in the service position and I noticed an entry in there about setting the mirrors to adjust downwards when reversing. I know it can be coded in VCDS, I presume there is no other way to enable this function. It's rather annoying as I was hoping it would come with it when I ordered to make parking up at night easier in my driveway.

Last but not least, can anyone with folding mirrors comment about if their drivers side mirror closes as much as the passenger side. On my car the passenger side will close in tighter to the body of the car than the drivers side and I wondered if this was normal as it seems a bit odd that the car would be purposely lop sided when locked up.

I just wanted to share with you about the downward adjustment of wing mirrors when reversing.

I have a Superb (soon to be a Octy L&K) and the way that I achieved the same thing is on the driver seat settings. I am assuming that you have three settings with mine being 1 for myself, 2 for my wife and 3 for reversing.

All I had to do on setting 3, assuming the seat remains unchanged, is to dip both mirrors as required and press the set button. I am trying remember as I type this is do you press the set button first and then 3, I am not sure but your user manual will explain.

When reversing it is obviously a manual process to press seat position 3 as this is not linked to the gearbox.

Elegance doesn't have memory seats unless they have been added as an option.

As for the mirrors folding in, yes, the drivers side doesn't seem to fold in as much.

Sadly, no memory seats but then again I don't need them as I will be the only driver of the car.

Thanks for the reassurance about the drivers mirror. I was starting to worry something was up with it. At least I don't need to moan at the dealers. Sounds like I need to find someone in Essex ASAP to run VCDS on my car as there are a few things I think I'd like to get coded.

Don't bother coding the dipped mirror. I have coded this on both my Octy and Leon and the mirror never returns to the correct position once your disengage reverse and pull forward or stop the car - not sure why this is so? I used to have this feature on a Mk5 Golf and it worked perfectly without memory seats so not sure why it no longer works on MQB platform vehicles?

This feature used to be standard on FR Leon but has since been removed.

I had that mirror feature on a Renault years ago and I didn't like it.  I think you're better off without it, as with it the view is very restricted.

Mirrors completely normal, the passenger mirror is profiled differently to the drivers side as is the case on most VAGs so the passenger mirror does fold in slightly tighter than the drivers side; confirm mine is the same. Unfold the mirrors look at the car from directly above (if you can) and you'll see the difference.
