caring for a leather steering wheel...

Featured Replies

I have recently replaced my leather steering wheel and now have a new one, R32 style, perforated leather round the sides and nappa top and bottom.

It could do with a clean but do not want to damage it or shorten the life of the finish. It is just starting to go a little shiny and I would like to bring it back to matt....

What's best to use? Am thinking leather cleaner but will that be too harsh?

Car leather cleaners have oils in them . Use a pea amount of toothpaste on kitchen roll and rub all over then wipe again with moistened kitcen roo then leave an hour to dry. Then use leather care , I use zymol as it noirishes without a shine. Toothpaste is only slightly abbrasive. I used to good affect on a five year old Lexus which was well shiny.

Those magic sponges return it to matt well, the muck that came off mine was rank. Tis back to shiny after about 4 month thou (plus not sure if these may have any detrimental effect long term but mine's fine), didn't use any care product after though.

Be careful not to get any of the stuff you use stuck in the perforated leather, that would be a nightmare to clean out.

Agree with this - good wipe down with APC; then Dr Leather wipes worked fine for me.

^ thats why i wouldn't use the toothpaste

Didn't know you had  perforated leather , I always thought the only leather was the top bit the rest is plastic like the rear seats and seat backs

Thanks for the replies guys.

Just to clarify, it is R32 style wheel, professionally retrimmed in real leather, perforated and nappa.

If you want to try some I can bring mine along to the next meet.

Not sure if the OP has a leather sofa, if so it is likely to have come with an after care cleaning box full of goodies. The wipes & sprays in them work a treat.

Otherwise, the wipes mentioned above are just the job.

Thanks Martin, appreciate that, however, I'm not sure I will be there yet, much busy-ness happening this month...
