How "essential" is the engine cover?

Featured Replies

I tried to fit mine yesterday! It won't fit!

Intercooler intake pipework in the engine bay stops it. :o Is it really just a noise deadening thing? I might try zip tieing it down to the IC pipework, but TBH I'm just thinking, "why bother? - Expose the wonders of the engine to the world"

Not at all, AFAIK. In fact some people believe the heat it retains is a contributor to coil pack failure (not that that affects you) and leave it off anyway. It's purely cosmetic.

PS - we need pics!!

If it's too noisy without it stick a bit more material to the inside of the bonnet.

OK! I like the bare bones look of the exposed engine anyway.

I did notice in the Leics meet thread though that John Yardley got his cover back on with the same FMIC as me? Most odd. It just simply wouldn't go down far enough at the front to click onto those two little noggin things. :D

I don't think noise is anything I need worry about. Its still gonna sound like a diesel whatevr. ;)

Mainly noise reduction (esp. in my case where I added the PDxxx sound reduction stuff under it, it is kept in place partially by the cover).

Also I suppose it's done for cosmetic reasons and you can kinda clean it easy I suppose

Engine looks Cack without it IMO! Just a big ugly lump of Pig Iron!

Might sound stoopid, but all engine covers are the same design right? I just remembered it was my old engine's cover I offered up, not the actual normal vRS one.... Doubt it'll make any difference.

My engine won't need hiding, so shall keep her uncovered I think. One little addition I have made is a little pad between the dipstick tunnel & the FMIC pipework... Was a little bit of rubbing unfortunately.

The engine cover certainly reduces the high frequency diesel 'clatter' noises. It probably keeps some road dirt off the top of the engine also. On a Passat I used to have there was additional foam sound absorbent material around the inlet manifold and injectors; this reduced the clatter further. I've got a vague memory of someone saying that you can fit a similar part from a SEAT pdi to the Fabia pdi diesels.

My engine cover never seemed to get dirty though?

I'll see how she sounds. Noise isn't a worry to me TBH.

my engine covers got the airbox built into it!! can't leave mine off like the 1.8T or ur 1.9TDI so have to have the plastic engine look :thumbdwn:

Isnt there an insulation thing that you can get from a Seat that wraps around the engine?

Yep - I've got it on mine and it does make a difference in muting the higher frequency clatter stuff. :)

Don't take it off! The engine looks bigger with the cover on top of it :D
