110 TDi loss of power (pt5)

Featured Replies

Here is the next update.... took the car to another dealer up in Yeovil. One of the mechanics came out for a test drive, and we both concluded that you just hear a fraction of a turbo whistle. With that in mind, the mechanic as suggested that the dump valve on the turbo is stuck open.

I now have a new (to me) turbo to fit.... my local mechanic thinks about 3 hours - does that seem realistic? I as going to let the mechanic do this, as there is no haynes, etc... and the turbo is not in the easiest of places to get to. Hopefully this will take place on Thur or Friday (waiting for the local VW dealer to get some gaskets) and then normal motoring may resume....

right... back to knocking down a ceiling!

A diesel does not have a dump valve.

The variable vanes do get stuck which controls the amount of boost produced meaning you get an overboost situation where the car will go ok then stop pulling and will be fine again after turning the ignition on and off again.

When replacing the turbo you will need a new oil supply line, usually the adaptor on top of the turbo will snap off.

3 hours labour is about right, not a difficult job.

Are you sure you want the same mechanic who diagnosed a problem with a dump valve your car doesn't even have to replace your turbo for you? Just a thought.

:iagree: With the above.

ok... not dump valve - what ever the thing is called on it. I am having a local mechanic do the job....

Did your dealer not supply you with a 3 or 6 month warranty when you purchased the car??

Surely your faulty turbo should be at least partly covered by the dealer under some sort of warranty through their garage.
