tire noise from rear

Featured Replies

I have read many many posts about tire roar from the rears,I got new tires with a low dB level and had four wheel alignment, they were fine for a few hundred miles and started to roar again. I am thinking of selling the car, has anyone actually managed to solve the problem and if so how?? Diving me crazy!!

Thanks

How are the tyres weaarin on the inside edge.  Run your hand over the inside edge to see if they are bumpy.

What tyres did you fit?

What size are they?

What settings did the aligner use?

How many kilometres has the car done?

hatch or wagon

have you added any extra sound deadener to the rear of the vehicle (even extra carpet).

You are aware that:-

1) The EU's "tyre performance measurements" are self-certified by the tyre makers?

2) The quoted noise level is drive-by noise and not in-car noise?

Beyond that I think Brad's on the right track, particularly if the tyres are suffering from "saw-toothing".

I'm a bit surprised the noise returned so quickly.

As we're a bit bereft of technical infomation, you'll have to fill in Brad's questionaire.

Octavia's aren't the quietest car in the world. Lots of noise comes in, particularly through the rear wheel arch.

They are also prone to corrosion on the adjuster on the transverse link which alters the settings. Often the guy will just call it done.

The rig can only facilitate adjustment, not guarantee it is done properly.

The popular Hunter aligner at "my" place is always online and should automatically be updated with any changes in specification.

As far as I am aware, the factory has published two settings for rear suspension.

The latest being 1.20' +/- 30' which should have been used on your vehicle.

http://www.wheels-inmotion.co.uk/ is highly regarded for setting up suspension, and is at least in your end of the country.

I would not use a high street tyre fitter type place. At. All.

225 40 R18 Dunlop sport maxx on the rear, I didn't want to go down the route of expensive boots as this problem has always returned on both Octavia estates I have had. The car has done 41k miles but the rears have done around 2k Max. When I got the car last December the rears were badly worn on the inside. I had a local garage do a full 4 wheel alignment but the noise came back although I don't believe they were using a hunter system. Car is the CD vRS diesel estate. Noise comes in almost dead on 70mph and gets worse the longer I drive for, that may be temp related or just me!!

Nickguzzi. I will come over to you to get this sorted once and for all but any idea of cost? Thanks

The 4 wheel alignment you had done, was it just the tracking of the wheels or was it camber adjustment as well.Normally a 4 wheel set up costs about £90 upwards where as 4 wheel tea kings about £30 up.

I had three full Hunter alignments done and decent tyres fitted before it went away on mine.

The third one was done at a different place to the first two (second one was complaining about the first) and the tyres were changed to Dunlop energy saver things all round (I'll check which ones if you're interested).

No problems since (well over a year) and tyres are wearing much better and are quieter than expected anyway.

Wheels in motion is nothing to do with me personally. They have a very good reputation and specialise in vehicle alignment. Many members have found them to be good.

They are more or less in your neck of the woods, which is why I suggested them.

I use a guy who specialises in TVR's. Ex audi guy, so a bit of product knowledge. Matt Smith at Downham Market.

Cost is likely to be £80-100. Depends on time taken, which depends what is wrong, if any thing is seized etc.

My experience of this mirrors KBP's. The car is not only quieter (once any sawtoothing is gone, swop wheels end to end to scuff it off) grip and handling is much better and tyre life improves enough to make it economic for me to have it done at each tyre change.

I'm on 225x45x17 Hankook's. The 18" are likely to be nosier. Different brands of tyre vary quite a bit too.

Hope you get it sorted.
