Starting problems

Featured Replies

Hi All.

My octavia has recently had new alternator and a recondition starter motor due to two different problems. After refitting the starter motor the battery was iffy so we bought a new one.

The sales guy in the car part locally said that the one we bought which was 1Ah less than the one we removed would still be ok to start the car. After only 3 days it is struggling to start. Is the battery under powered?

Are your glow plugs ok?

Are the new starter and alternator OK? What battery do you have? Any fault codes? Any possible unexpected power drains?

Don't know about glow plug condition as not checked them but was starting ok before starter motor issues.

The alternator is only a few months old.

The starter motor had new solenoids and a clean up.

The battery is a cheaper brand from a local motor factors.

Unable to check fault codes as I don't have a reader.

No extra power drain issues as far as I am aware as we don't leave any accessories plugged in and we haven't added any extras to the standard in-car entertainment.

This time of year the glow plugs won't do anything.

What do you mean struggling to start?

Is there a difference between hot and cold starts?

Takes a few turns before it starts, almost like a flat battery. Battery is Lion Battery 075 60Ah 520CCA.

According to the wife (who drives it the most) there is no difference hot or cold

Battery sounds OK, capacity wise.

Any smoke?

No smoke that I noticed

Could be fuel issue.

It would be worth getting a fault code scan. See if there is someone with VCDS near you.

Time for a quick update. Picked up a new more powerful battery (70Ah 620CCA) the car has been starting 1st time with no problems. Fingers crossed that has solved the problem
