Different sized spare wheel

Featured Replies

Hi,

I had a 1.2 SE hatch with the tyre size 205/55/16. While ordering the car I did go for the full size spare wheel i.e. Same as above.

No I have a 1.6 Black Edition with the tyre size 225/40/18.

My question is, can I still use the spare wheel from my old car 16" in my new black edition 18" OR do you have to have the same diameter sized spare wheel.

Pardon my ignorance.

Saurabh

It's stamped on the wheel. Usually near the bore hole... ET38 for example (no idea why they always put ET in front of it, but they do!).

If I go on SUK and try to configure a new SE Estate then its giving me options to add either steel spare wheel or a space saver spare wheel.

However, when I upgrade wheels from 16" to 18" then only space saver wheel is available and the standard steel spare wheel gets greyed out.

Does this mean the 16" steel spare wheel I have is not going to fit my new car?

Thats cool. I'll try and find the offset in the morning.

Unless they fit bigger brakes if you spec 18 inch wheels (which they don't) then I can't imagine why they wouldn't fit. But equally I can't give a logical reason why they would chose to not offer the steel spare if you spec 18s! Very odd - might be worth a call to customer services to double check there isn't something fundamental I'm missing.

The offset will be stamped into the spare wheel if steel or on the back of one of the spokes if an alloy. It will be 'ET then a number'. 18" alloys have ET51 (51 mm offset) - however the width of the alloy and the offset together are what you need. The width is measured in inches eg. 7J, 7.5J, 8J.

Just google 'alloy wheel offset calculator' and this should help.

+ or - 5mm on the offset is general rule of thumb.

Yes.  A 205/55-16 is the size of spare tyre supplied by Skoda for my Octavia vRS with standard 225/40-18 tyres. The overall diameter is the same (well, differ by less than 1%).  Just note that under the Construction and Use regulations differing sized tyres on the same 'axle' are only allowed as a temporary measure in an emergency (e.g., following a puncture) and the car is then limited to 80kph (50mph).  My spare has a 80kph sticker.  The actual offset of the wheel is different as the width is also different.

Is your vrs a mk3 as I've got an 18" space saver. You need a minimum of 17 to fit over the front brakes or do in the uk anyway.

It's short for Einpresstiefe which is German for something like 'insertion depth'.

My Elegance came from the factory with 225/40R18 and a 205/55R16 spare so you should be fine. It is only a temporary spare anyway as already stated.

Cheers Andyvee...

As shown in my profile it is a 2012 vRS so a MKII FL and a 16" spare will fit on the front - I have checked.

Ah sorry - was on mobile so couldn't see.  There's been at least one instance of people getting the wrong space saver, would be quite a show at 2am on the motorway with a flat at the front ;)/

You modern guys accessing the internet on your phones always catch me out!  My old eyes prefer a PC with a 24" monitor.  Wrong spare only slightly worse than relying on a tin of foam.  Everyone I know who has tried to repair a puncture with one of those tins of foam has failed and ended up stranded.

It comes from the German, "Einpresstiefe".
