1.9TDI clutch

Featured Replies

I am still running my '04 Octavia 1.9TDI Estate, just gone over 220,500 miles...

The clutch has started juddering, it's sounding pretty agricultural at tickover (the vibration's getting gradually worse), and now it's getting harder to change up the 'box.

The clutch pedal itself is biting towards the bottom end of its travel, which to me says that the clutch isn't separating enough any more. It doesn't feel to be dragging though.

On acceleration, there's a notchy feeling until the revs go up above about 1500, and it sounds rather meaty inside the car, due to the vibration. this makes me think the clutch is going off-centre due to worn centre bearing.

I'm guessing it's the clutch centre and withdrawal bearings which are on their way out (it's the original clutch), so how big / costly a job is it to get the clutch & bearings replaced? I do need to keep the car on the road, still can't afford a replacement!

I'm guessing it isn't a dual-mask flywheel, but haven't investigated that far yet.

Any constructive suggestions welcomed!

Richard.

The car does have a DMF, but investigating wear in that is a gearbox out job anyway. I think it's more likely bearing(s) or friction plate wear, but the sensible thing to do is actually open it up and replace as required.

Sounds like the clutch & DMF are dying.

Bugger. Guessing the DMF is a damn sight more costly than an ordinary flywheel too.

oh well, it's booked in for next Wednesday anyway for some much needed treatment!

Cheers for your replies chaps,

Richard.

Mine has been like that for 55000 miles. Dmf used to rattle like mad. I just kept driving it and now the dmf has gone solid again. Just brought a new genuine luk clutch and pressure plate on ebay for £28 including delivery. It's the 228mm type for a smf. Went to the breakers brought a smf from a 2011 mk2 octavia 1.6tdi common rail for £20 then went to gsf brought a genuine luk release bearing for £19. So £67 all in bargain. Now just need to fit it all... 55000 on knackered flywheel.
