twin side mount intercoolers

Featured Replies

So what do I need? Found the BAM intercoolers for £50 but I'm guessing I'll need some pipe work etc?????

Easier with bam inlet then you can use most of the piping that the intercoolers have, assuming they come with piping?

I was thinkin about doing this too but unsure about the cooling of the near side unit as that side intake hole is closed up

Tbh it is a ball ache for not much gain. To use the bam twin coolers you will have to fit the bam inlet manifold that has throttle the battery side. Depending on what you got with the coolers you will spend more than that price getting the battery side intercooler pipework and map pipe and connecting hose to bam inlet. You can't use your existing hoses as they are different. Then you need the long length to connect the two intercoolers together. Although you could still use your existing map sensor on your drivers side intercooler you could also make your own pipping up. But then you could buy a universal FMIC for £80 and get much better cooling.

The fact that these coolers are fitted behind the bumpers makes them not very efficient also. But argument could say if good enough for a 225 bam engine then good enough for the vrs.

Universal fmic for £80 weres that bud? Do like ur kit just to many pennies [emoji24]

As well as all the gear Bowders1 lists, you'll need a ventilated NSF grill.

You'd probably be as well just doing the "pikey arch vent mod" (swiss-cheese, or galvanised louvre vent or Audi TT vent in RHF arch behind the standard SMIC.

Yeah I've done that, and I've drilled the ns grille for an air intake anyway! Very short of funds ATM so was looking for another way round!

If I can get an aftermarket for £80 then ideal guessing pipework would be more again though

what power you running buddy.

Are you getting heat soak and high intake temps?

If you want cheap option then just replace the std SMIC with a bigger SMIC

something like this

it is not as efficient as a FMIC but if you don't have funds than to is by far cheapest as no messing with extra hoses

Or just saves funds for later if you are not running with a mapped car

It's running 200hp on the nose with a conservative map, I do get some bogging down when it's hot out, would just like to get the intake temps down and maybe get another map to 220 ish it's had most things done for stage 2 but having children has put pay to any serious mods now

Also have been told the smic weren't very good

It all relative buddy.

Depends what is your driving factor. If it is cost you don't have much options.

You can still get improvements but not as massive as could be achieved

You would have been told a SMIC were not very good by someone who has fitted a FMIC,  so of course the FMIC is better. But if you ask is a bigger better flowing performance SMIC better than a std VRS SMIC then yes it is.

It's about budget for you.

I fitted a bigger smic intercooler and it caused lag. i then replaced it with an OEM one from a golf and the cooler was bigger than the octavia. Its part number ended in F and has a bigger core. hardly suffered any heatsoak with this cooler

Interesting! I take it that was a 150bhp gti?? Makes you wonder why it's be bigger?

Yeah it came off a 150 AUM car. I posted pictures on here of the difference in size. Will see if i can find the thread now

Also the ducting does fit on the bigger one too.

so is the golf unit a plug and play swap BB?

Yes swap no problem. The octavia part number ends in 803s and the golf 803F on mine anyway. Just check yours before you go ahead
