Top mount problems

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

I started a thread the other day thinking my steering rack or pump was knackered as my steering was creaking when turning the wheel. On further investigation it's quite obvious now that the rack and pump are fine and the creaking is something to do with the top mounts.

This is the top mount with the car sat on the floor (ie now)

And when I jack it up off the floor.

Same for both sides.

So, octavia gurus, what's happened here, how do I fix it and what do I need (if I need new parts)?

Cheers in advance.

Chris

There is always some give in the rubber top mounts.

This isnt a fault, just what happens.  If they are old you could look at replacing them...the Leon Cupra R ones are firmer.

Would the Leon Cupra R ones be ok for Tdi as well?

I had some creaking/boing sounds, sometimes loud sometimes faint. Turned out to be siezed top mount bearings.

Replaced with new bearing and rubber top mount. All sorted.

Replacement bearings and mounts ordered.

What did you get?

Sorry for the delay. I ordered a set from a link in another thread via search. Another eurocarparts style website (gsf I think), nothing fancy. I want to confirm that they are the fault before splashing out on anything fancy. It's the wife's motor after all.

I'm away from home atm, they should be there by now so I'll probably have a go at fitting them at the weekend.

Top mounts and bearings changed. Relatively easy job. Old set weren't too bad, in fact they weren't the cause of my problem. Further investigation has identified that the rack is on it's way out. Still, the mounts are good for a while now.

there are the same

I have brand new top mounts on mine and they look like that.

there are the same

The TDI ones are the same as the VRS ones.

The LCR re not the same as the TDI / VRS ones in that the LCR are 30% stiffer material and have a different P/N

my mistake but the fitting is still the same

No worries .

Yes fitting and the look of them is identical. You would never know if you did not check p/n's.
