"Search Suite"

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Having recently changed my PC I keep getting a popup from the McAffee software which came with the machine telling me that a program called "Search Suite" is trying to run. I telll McAffee to remove it but then get another popup for it shortly after so it is almost as if it can't be removed.

Is "Search Suite" safe (in which case I will allow it)? As I have never heard of it until now I have no idea. Advice welcome.

Cheers,

Dave

Hi Dave

I have just done a Google on 'Search Suite' and it's not very nice.  Get reliable anti virus software and get rid of it.

First thing first, remove McAfee.

Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/security-essentials-download

Download and install and run Malwarebytes https://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/

I'd also download Spybot Search and Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/mirrors/

I use all three products myself, all are free and I've been virus free for some time now.

I dont personally rate MSE, - but then NO AV program is 100% effective; I will up-vote the other two recommendations though.

Agree with Lee01 except don't put MSE on your PC unless you've removed McAfee first. 2x antivirus on the same PC isn't usually a good idea.

AV probably won't shift this anyway, Malwarebytes will probably do the trick.

Mcafee might be the only thing stopping it running so don't remove it until you've cleaned the system of it.

Mcafee pages should have instructions on removal.

+1 on MSE. It isn't all that.

Gadgetman,

Cleaning the system was proving impossible as when I pressed "Remove" and then confirm that I would get another prompt for it almost immediately and then end up with several prompts an hour.

Once installed and updated, it might be best to reboot into safe mode before trying to remove the malware with MWB; that stops it from trying to repair itself by downloading itself again as it is deleted.

I got rid of McAffee and then ran the Malwarebytes job. However I did the former before the latter (!) but MWB picked up the bugged files and I quarantined them, along with a large number of files that had the same infection. I have had no prompts since.

You'll still need an AV

Malwarebytes will live on a PC quite happily with an AV.

So put McAfee back on or you could try Avast or MSE.
