mystery noise

Featured Replies

Hi all hope you are all well! I have a bit of a problem with my ocy vrs suddenly whilst driving home last night I thought my auxiliary belt was screeching but the noise continued off and on all the way home and when sat on drive on tick over it continued a ver high pitched noise.not affected wether clutch in or out but constant. Got up today no noise untill after aprox 10 mins the the noise returned off and on but worse when stationary and when lifting off the accelerator. Two garages have looked and we all believe its coming from the right hand side of engine. Sounds abit like air at high pressure. On mechanic thinks clutch another in ket manifold but both said not hrard anything like it before?

Just wondering if anyone experienced anything like it before.

When turn ignition off the noise continues for about 15 seconds sounds like balloon going down

Anyway would be grateful for any advice opinions

Cheers

Sounds turbo related but I can't see how there would be enough residual pressure in the inlet side to hiss for 15secs after engine stop.

Presumably there are no warning lights and your garages scanned for logged issues without finding anything.

Thanks for the reply I did consider turbo myself but im suprised it would make the noise on tickover if was turbo very strange but it does sound like a balloon where tge air is been let out slowly

The screeching may be the auxiliary belt, perhaps the tandem pump is the problem re deflating balloon noise.

Use a 1m length of garden hose to pinpoint the source of the sound with the engine running, hold one end to an ear and poke around with the other end but be careful of moving parts.

As far as I'm aware the tandem pump pumps fuel and creates vacuum for the brake servo so it and its pipework are a prime candidate.

Try a squirt of water on the auxiliary belt to see if it stops the screech, I've found when it's a problem an application of hot water and detergent followed by a good rinse sorts things. All applied while the engine is running, again I stress being careful with moving parts.

This sounds like the alternator clutch.

The pulley has a one-way clutch in it that allows it to freewheel.

They evetually fail and have make all manner of horrible noises.

If you can remove the auxiliary belt and give the pulley a wiggle and spin. Also run the car without the belt on and if there are no noises then there's your answer.

Just had the answer its a faulty breather pipe by air inlet manifold a much cheaper solution! Got to garage this morning engine management light on but sorted now

Many thanks for the responses
