Help - Columbus, iPhone and Bluetooth Music Streaming

Featured Replies

I've done a seach on this and have a mixed-bag of results, hence the new topic...

I have a Sept 2011 Superb Elegance fitted with the standard Columbus head unit. Whilst my iPhone 4S connects for calls and I can see the phonebook etc.in the Maxidot and I can get bluetooth media connection (albeit randomly sometimes) too, I can't choose tracks from the stream via headunit or the wheel controls, nor are any of the track details shown on the headunit or Maxidot.

Is this a simple fix, or do I have to add/remove and replace the BT unit? Seems really rediculous that this has ben available as standard on many other manufacturers units for years (incluiding my son's 2007 Fiat Punto) yet this is a half-hearted effort from VAG on a very expensive (to replace) unit!

Any help appreciated.

The A2DP protocol in Bluetooth which is used for streaming audio over Bluetooth does not give control to the music from the headunit, you must control the music on the phone/other device itself. This is not a limitation of the Columbus, but the Bluetooth protocol. The only way to get of control the music on the Columbus is to connect via an MDI interface and cable which is an optional factory extra.

You may if your lucky get to skip back and forward with the tracks, but the APP you are using must support AVRCP protocol for that to work.

Thanks for the info Manny, but I'm afraid I have no idea what you are talking about? :)

On the Bluetooth connection on my son's Punto and his girlfriends Megane, bluetooth music streaming shows the artist, track name etc. on the dash and headunit. They can skip tracks via the wheel mounted buttons. I think what you're saying is all that's a no-no on the Columbus.... unless you connect the phone with a fancy lead, that the car isn't prepped for, to the Columbus?

Pretty much,

You can retrofit the MDI kit easily enough, the kits are available on ebay. You then get the added benefit of the phone or whatever device charging. In fact you can connect a USB HDD or USB stick and dispense with the Music player all together.

Thanks Mannyo - that answers the question! Given there is no real advantage to connecting with the phone for music, I'll probably just go with with a 32gb SD card in the front of the unit!
