Launch control in a manual?

Featured Replies

I thought launch control was just for autos, to keep the revs up and help get the car off the line as fast as possible.

Iv heard people say you can get it on a manual though? My mates getting a new ECU for his civic to match his new engine and reckons it comes with launch control?

So what does it do on a manual?

Iv searched the internet but cant see much

Cheers!

It's like a rev limiter lower down so you plant your foot it keeps it at about 3000rpm on a mk1 vRS and then you let the clutch up and it launches you

On most ecu systems it uses the abs wheel sensors, it compares the rear wheel speed to the front wheel speed, if there is any differential between these two readings it assumes a wheelspin condition, so it either retards the igniton timing or it cuts every 3rd spark or sometimes cuts the igniton completely, or effectively it reduces the power output from the engine temporarily till wheel slip ceases, it doesn't actually make the car accelerate any faster, it just means you can go much closer to the the threshold of wheelspin whislt the ecu keeps it in control.

It's a real nuisance in the snow of travelling on loose surfaces like gravel.

Ahh! That makes sense.

Cheers :) i couldnt work it out myself. That makes sense though. Thanks :).

Every days a school day!

Some of the more advanced ecu's can have different slip limits for each gear as well, plus some are adaptive too which means the ecu 'learns' at what rpm the slip occurs and it will clamp the wide open throttle speed of the engine at this learnt rpm. Some ecu's can have very clever stuff like that going behind the scenes send the driver is totally unaware it even exists.

My dads Jetta does this. He was going up a hill in the snow one day and it started skidding and it wouldn't let the engine rev at all past a certain point.

Would I be right in assuming that this is the same thing?

Or is that traction control?

Iv found thats useless in the snow as it cuts too much power when the going gets really tough

Well I always assumed it was just traction control, but when it was described above it sounds the same, or is it all just traction control?

I'm not sure.

I can only assume when my mate says his new ECU has launch control, itll have a button on the dash to activate it?

Or maybe these things just sort themselves out when they think you need it?

Yeah that will be Traction Control on a Jetta pal.

First car I had with Traction Control was my '03 Vectra, it was a total PITA when it kicked in on the slippy stuff, so I just turned it off and controlled it myself.

I've never tried it on my Civic but if I was sitting at the lights and put my foot flat to the floor, the revs would sit at 4000rpm until I lifted the clutch. not sure what it does after that though.

Makes sense. Just sounds abit easier than trying to hold the revs at 4k yourself though, then get the power on progressively.

Most people who claim to have "Launch Control" just have a rev limiter.

Real launch control is far more advanced.

Hmm. I guess a 1997 civic that wasnt ever even supposed to be a 'race car' is gonna have a very complicated system.

I bet hes just got the rev limiter then. Sounds like a waste of time tbh

Launch Control with variable sheel slip etc.. (as Teflon Tom described above) does tend to be on newer cars and I'm not sure it can be "mapped in" either.

When I see people get a remap and say they now have launch control they don't, they have a rev limiter so they don't have to hold the car at a certain RPM manually.

Launch control on fabia vRS mk1 (if done right) should also start to build a little fuelling and turbo boost.  It's more than just a limiter. :)   I know my 3000rpm launch control works pretty well.  I can't seem to get it any quicker off the line without it.

My Civic will rev to 7500rpm before it hits the limiter

Yeah, but thats just normal driving? No launch limiter?

My understanding of launch control specifically on turbo cars is to allow the turbo's to spool up for maximum power then the system works to control the launch of the car. On VW group cars I believe the low limiter is simply to stop people over revving the car. As for going up a hill in the snow thats traction control, which really wants to be turned off in snow

If I am sitting stationary and floor the throttle without lifting the clutch it will sit at 4000rpm. If I then lift the clutch and start moving then it will rev to 7500 before the limiter kicks in.

As i said before, to stop people over revving car stationary

The 1.2 tsi (not sure about my HTP, i havent tried) fabia doesnt let you rev past 3500rpm when stationary, but that doesnt have launch control haha.

Old htp lets you redline when stopped

Cause thats not launch control its something in place by vw to stop people over revving the car. Manual skoda dont have launch control only the automatic and I believe it to be only on the octavias with the 6 speed dsg.

Yeah thats what i mean. The rev limiter isnt always launch control is it :).
