Gtechniq G5

Featured Replies

Bottle arrived this am. Instructions state not to use on vehicles that go over 40mph.

Is this correct?!

Sure?

Does it read not for use under 40mph.

I use rain-x and little useful happens till around 50.

Or just use 1st gear and you'll be fine!

Or you've to apply it over 40mph! If you manage this we will need video evidence.

Ha ha ha! States to use G1 if you fancy a trip over 40mph!

Take no notice, it's perfectly fine. G5 starts to move water around 30mph. If you do motorway driving a lot they recommend G1, but G5 is just as good, although G1 is more durable.

Thanks peeps. Any advice on application?

Yes

Make sure you clean the glass thoroughly

I use Glass cleaner and then IPA

Use a piece of kitchen roll folded into a 3" square

Apply a pa sized blob to the 'applicator' and wipe on firmly in overlapping circles, repeating the application

Leave to haze a few minutes and buff off with a clean MF towel

Any smearing or over application on rubber or plastic can be removed with a light spritz of water and another buff with the towel

At this point some people leave it an hour and rapply another coat...Ive never found this necessary

Thanks peeps. Any advice on application?

Wash screen, clay screen, Polish screen, wash screen, IPA screen. Apply in tight circular motions with a make up pad. Leave 10 minutes or so. Then wipe with kitchen towel which will remove about half of the product. Then remove remainder with a microfibre cloth, don't add any water as they recommend no water contact if at all possible.

Thanks Chris. Gonna sound thick here but......what is IPA? The last time I has IPA I over did it and was sick in the garden. Assume it's not the same stuff?!

Thanks too NM.

Isopropyl Alcohol

Taken from the horses mouth as they say, try not to use any water

On new glass simply clean and apply the G5 using the applicator pads of a soft lint free towel. Apply the sealant to dry glass in circular movements to ensure even coverage. Polish off with a clean paper towel until no streaks remain. On older or weathered glass, Gtechniq recommends using Gtechniq G4 Glass Nano Polish prior application for maximum adhesion and crystal clarity. Avoid contact with water for 2 hours after application.

I've stuck with G5 for the 2nd year now and never found the need for G1.

Very easy to apply indeed and great results.  :)

As stated above in Post #8 - the full and thorough preparation of the surface gets the best results

Let us know how you get on with it

Applied tonight and it went on like a dream. I didn't apply loads but managed to get a haze. Buffed off with a microfiber. Awaiting rain now! I'm getting a bit addicted to this car cleaning lark it has to be said!

there are a couple of tips to getting the longest life and best performance from these coatings once you have done the good prep above

1. dont use the wipers any more than you have to. The actual mechanical wear from the wipers has a big impact on the life. Keep the blades cleaned regularly so when you do use them it doesnt add to the wear. If you have an 'auto' wipers setting you might want to turn it off unless you spend a lot of time at low speeds where the coating wont really help

2. dont make your screen wash too strong. Some contain fairly strong cleaners to shift all that road grime. Its a fine balance as obviously you want to be able to keep your screen clean, but you'll find the coating itself makes the screen easier to clean, so experiment and try not to squirt it on too often.

Good thing is that these coatings also make the frost easier to clear from the screen on those cold mornings, as it doesnt bond to the glass as well. Not such an issue for all us Superb owners with heated windscreens though :D

Oh do please sod off.

I've been thinking of getting some G5 at some point. Could someone tell me how much you get in a bottle, I mean how many applications rather than the quantity.

You don't need much to do the whole car. I'm guessing you would get a number of years/applications out of one 100ml bottle given it lasts 3-5 months.

I'd say at least 6 full cars. If your doing your own car only, then I'd say the product will go off before the bottle is empty.

Its more than likely that it will degrade if kept for a long time

Gtechniq have a shelf life on their products

I have an old bottle of G3...Its now G5. It was called this before getting stung in a copyrite court case, I believe

Its useless now as its over 2 years old and separated

I reapply G5 every 2 or 3 months...You can apply over it once its applied

Gtechniq say this:

Storage
In tightly sealed original container at room temperature, storage is possible for at least 24 months.
Check for signs of deterioration if the recommended storage period has been exceeded. Protect
from frost, heat and moisture.

Do you have to do the full clean/clay/IPA when re-applying it?

Its more than likely that it will degrade if kept for a long time

Thanks for the answers people, that'll be great if it lasts a fair while, I'll see about getting some.
