Felicia pickup gearbox change...

Featured Replies

Hi...

My gearbox in my VW/Skoda pickup is really noisy and difficult to change gear. Its the 1.9d version.

I have another gearbox (still with shafts in) which I am planning to fit.

I have not undertaken this job on one of these before and am looking for some pointers from those who know them well.

Clearly it all needs unbolting, but what is the best way to drop the hubs, get the shafts out, extract the gearbox and refit it all with the new box.

Cheers

Greg

Fairly straightforward, there's nothing wrong with your plan. I take the strut off the nearside bottom ball joint, then the shafts can come out of the hubs and then the box comes out with the driveshafts attached.

If you're taking the driveshafts out, they just pop out, but the gearbox oil will follow (smells really bad). Careful as it's easy to pull the inner CV apart instead of taking the shaft out of the box.

Don't lose the little bolt and plate that hold the speedo cable in.

There's a big bolt at the back underneath that I always seem to miss, which normally makes the job loads harder.

From experience - Make sure the new gearbox has got oil in. I bought a spares car for the box, put it in, it drove lovely for 2k miles, then one day wouldn't disengage 3rd. Wish I'd checked!

Thanks for your reply...

What oil do the gearboxes on these take?

Did you have to remove the end plate off your gearbox to get it out, only have seen on some threads that this is neccesary...

Cheers

No, just supported engine and box with the crane, undid the box mounts and rocked the engine down a bit. You could probably do the same with a decent jack under the engine if you padded it well so as not to damage the sump.

Hi guys I'm changing my clutch soon and wanted advice on keep the crown gears from falling in. Seems I cant find anythin 26mm to put in place while I take the box off

Improvise. A 1" plastic pipe and some duct tape on it if too small. A broom stick. It's not rocket science...

I just remove shafts from inner cv joint less mess and new cv clamps it's 5x 16mm nuts and 2 10mm ones It's easy enough to do on a standard felicia but with air con it's much harder as heater box covers all its access
