Dead 2011 Skoda Octavia Scout 1.8TSI

Featured Replies

Dead 2011 Skoda Octavia Scout 1.8TSI - 85,000 miles (out of warranty on miles but under 3 years).

Garage: "Spark plug has melted and bits have fallen into cylinder which is seriously scored inside".

Me: "Could this be caused by the slipping timing chain known fault?".

Garage: "I've never heard of the timing chain slipping in the 1.8TSI plus you have missed a service so Skoda won't offer any goodwill".

On longlife servicing, I do not recall the car asking for a service. I wouldn't have just ignored it forever!?!?

I do recall a service light coming on some time after a previous service and being surprised. I took the car back and someone just came out with a computer, plugged in and reset something. Could this have caused it to not ask for a service when next due?

Can anyone offer any advice on similar cases? Known issues? How to approach Skoda? Or anything I can do?

Many Thanks,

M.

How many services has the car had?

You say it was set to variable / long life servicing? This is approx every 2 years or 20,000 miles, whichever is reached first.

At 85,000 miles you will have hit the mileage before the time so it should have had a minimum of 4 variable services by now.

Check the service book in the glovebox. Also check the service intervals for the spark plugs on the 1.8 TSi. If these have been changed since new then you might have some extra leverage for some goodwill from Skoda UK.

A lot of dealers will reset the service interval to fixed intervals (10,000 miles or 1 year, whichever is reached first) in an effort to get more services / business out of you.

It sounds to me as though after servicing it they rest the computer to fixed instead of variable. You've the covered 10,000 miles and been surprised at how soon the service light came on. I suspect they've then simply reset it back to variable without taking into account you've already done 10K since the last service resulting in you doing 30,000 miles between services - hence the missed service. Arguably their fault not yours - again another bit of leverage towards goodwill.

Also check that they've changed the Haldex (4x4 system) oil at 40,000 and 80,000 miles. This is often forgotten / missed.

Ohh no not another. Hope Skoda UK can help

1.8tsi spark plug change is every 100,000km (60k miles) although some places will try & get you in at 60,000km (35k miles?).

Another one? Does the 1.8 TSI have issues (looking worried as I have just bought one).

Dropping like flies but don't let that worry you :D  Check out the TSi engine failure thread.

But it appears to be the 2.0, not the 1.8 that seems to have issues. I had already seen that before I bought mine, and looked at a lot of european forums, all of which cited the odd failure with the 1.8, mainly Pre 2010 models.

Id suggest the reason the 2 litre crops up far more is simply because there's far more of them out there. The 1.8TSi is the same block, tensioner etc so just as prone to failures afaik.
