Drivers door unlocked but won't open

Hi I'm new to the forum but found it so helpful with the odd jobs on my mk1 octave 03 plate. I recently changed the drivers door lock following instructions from another thread and it all seemed fine. I had the faulty micro switch but just changed the unit. I put the door back together and all worked. Tried both internal and external handles to check door was opening before i closed it and worked perfectly 7 times. Then Closed the door and problems began. The door unlocks from key, switch and even 1st pull of handle. But that's it the door won't open. Also just noticed driving the car today I have lost left side light and all lights in drivers unit. Side, low, high and fog.

I'm really hoping someone knows a lot more than me as I'm a little stumped. At the moment I'm dropping the windows using the key in the lock. Climbing through and not driving at night.
