Cheap stuff from China

Featured Replies

A friend told me he'd ordered a cheap dash cam from a site called dx.com, just has a look there and seems to be some decent deals. It's all direct from China with free shipping to UK.

Not sure what the quality's like, but would guess it's on a par with anything ordered from similar China/HK eBay stores, and there's a huge range of stuff. Found a few interesting things (haven't ordered anything yet mind you):

Used in the past for some stuff, so had my dad. No complaints from me or my dad.

I've used them, and SWMBO is always trawling AliExpress.com

NZ retailers tend to try and sell things for as much as possible and some stuff on there is 90% cheaper than locally. As long as you're happy to wait 2-5 weeks for delivery.

Colleague of mine got a Huawei Smart phone from Alibaba. same direct China jobby.

Sim free, running Android worked perfectly. until he dropped it 9ft down the stairs and it went in 5hit :D

Tech coming out of China has improved massively in the last 5 years.

Reminds me of an accelerated version of what happened with Japanese tech back in the 80's.

I can see a time in the not too distant future where we'll be happy to pay a premium for it, much like we now do for stuff from Japan.

+1 for Chinese products. The deal extreme website is very good, so is aliexpress.

Just use the same common sense rules as you would e-bay. And at the end of the day if what you get is cheap and crap but proves a purpose you can then go and buy German! A colleague bought some ultra bright LED torches with red nightlight option, they didn't last long, overheated and failed, but proved useful. So he went and paid 10 times as much from a German supplier. Oh yeah, they failed too!

At the end of the day, most things are made in China nowadays.

True that. all the bits are made in China, then some parts are given a final assembly in, say, Germany, and it becomes "Made in Germany".

A bit like a guy i know whose brother drove long distance lorrying. He arrived once with a lorry load of Chilled Chickens that had been transported in from somewhere very far away.

All of them had 1 feather still in them, but otherwise fully plucked and gutted. they were being delivered to a food processing factory for Chicken Burgers / Kievs etc.

He asked about the 1 feather. reason - WE pluck that one feather, and we can label them as "Made in Ireland using Irish Produced Chicken"  and its within the limitations of how the legislation was written.

Here's a camera http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UK-HD-1080P-Sport-DV-12MP-Waterproof-Helmet-Action-Camera-Car-Cam-SJ4000-SDV4-/301315998345?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_Video_Camcorders&hash=item4627d54289 in the Go Pro mould, not trying to out do genuine Go Pro's but results are good for the price.

Having said that there is a new no frills Go Pro 4 'The Hero'  for £99    http://shop.gopro.com/EMEA/cameras/?gclid=CKqgq_C4ncECFY_MtAodmicA2g

would never touch the blah go pro's i have the hero 3+ black edition.

I have the 3+ Sllver, most impressed with the Still and the Video quality.  I only use in 720p and 50fps mode, My poor old Mac can't handle the uploads.   Interestingly the new Go pro 4 black has the 4k. feature,  well OTT considering what us amateurs do with them.  64 gig cards won't be storing much video time at that setting
