K&N air filters, anyone used them? Thoughts on them?

Featured Replies

Hello,

Seen quite a few mixed reviews and was wondering what people think and if anyone has used them? What's the difference between the cone one and flat (cake) one? I have a monte carlo, done 2000 miles and was thinking if I should change the air filter to a better one so I can look after the engine and also get better performance, even if it's minor..

Also reading about cold air intakes etc. can someone explain that to me please? how will the filter get cold air when all the air under the bonet is warm?

Thanks

I couldn't find a K&N cone filter specifically for the 1.2tsi. There is a panel filter you can buy but it offers no gains from what I have heard. It has a longer life as you can clean them with the special kit but £ for £ you are better with an OEM filter and regular changes.

I fitted a generic cone filter to mine and felt absolutely no power gains and no gains/loss in mpg, not that I expected to. The only notable difference was the noise, it had a slightly lower engine Note and you could hear the turbo whine a little more. I blanked off the original air filter box and connected it up with no bother at all. Took it off for a recent trip to the garage and haven't bothered putting it back on, unless you are showing the engine it seemed a bit pointless but that's my opinion. I was happy with it when it was on and enjoyed the noise but didn't miss it when it was off. I may put it back on one day.??

I'm not one hundred percent sure about cold intake and placement etc but there are a few discussions about it. Some people say that where the cone was fitted was acceptable and others disagreed, I have absolutely no mechanical knowledge so wouldn't even try to answer that question sorry.

what about this one? Isn't this the cone one? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/K-N-OE-Replacement-Performance-Air-Filter-Element-E-2997-/361065382422?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3ASkoda%7CModel%3AFabia%7CCars+Year%3A2013%7CCars+Type%3A1.2+TSI&hash=item54112c8216

fits a monte carlo according to the description

Only reason id have a k&n panel filter is because you can clean them out instead of buying a new one.

To be honest, i havent much experience with them on a car, but on a bike youd soon get your money back. £20 for oem and £30 for a k&n for my bike. Certainly worth looking into if you're thinking of saving a few quid

Air filters give you very little in terms of performance gains IMO.

The only reason i have ever used a K&N Filter is not to improve performance, because they will not,

but where H20 might get into the Air Filter, they do not fall apart like Paper ones.

For catching Water and Dust and general crap they are OK, cleaned out with the Correct Cleaner & redresses they can still be crap and reduce the air flow and increase your fuel consumption.

A Cone filter sitting in a Hot Engine compartment in warm weather is a waste of Money in Fuel and no improvement in performance. IMO.

Clean / Fresh / Dry OEM Filters will have your standard engine performing just fine,

The ECU will be adjusting to the Air Intake and external ambient temperatures as designed to.

I use the pancake filters on the MG but only as they're a lot less restrictive than factory
