very flat till 3000 rpm

Featured Replies

hi,

i bought the VRS of my cousin and he bought it in the same way. for some reason you don't get any pulling power ( torque ) till around 3000 rpm and it throws you back in your seat.

also black smoke on startup, and a cloud of black smoke when you put your foot down. usualy around 1800 rpm and tends to clear up around 3000 rpm.

i have removed and double checked every boost pipe and looked for any cracks or damage on the FMIC and i cannot seem to find any.

i also checked the tandem pump with my mity vac and its pulling 25"hg , actuator is holding vacuum also vanes have no resistance.

boost control box seems to be working fine

scanned with vagcom and no faults. only thing i noticed was my torsion value was -3.3 and i changed that to 0.5

so could this possibly be a fueling problem?

Recon PD150 turbo

remapped with launch control ( 3000 rpm )

thanks for any help

have you had a look for leaks in the boost pipes?

Checked the MAF sensor?

Hi,

I have checked for leaks with my air compressor after leaving it for 5 minutes pressured it still held the same pressure.

As for the maf sensor i haven't done any logging because my battery on my laptop has failed so i cannot do any live logging. but maf reads between 430 / 450 on idle and goes above 500 when i rev the engine.

I did adjust my actuator ( made the rod shorter )  and i seem to be boosting around 2500 rpm now.

When in 3rd gear when i'm over 3000 rpm if i press my brakes the pedal becomes hard and  difficult to stop, its like braking on ice, could be down to a faulty servo / pvc pipe?

I'm also getting really bad mpg between 25 / 30 mpg with gear changes around 1500 / 2000 rpm.

Thanks for the reply

I would suggest the actuator / VNT isn't setup right on the turbo - especially if a recon.  The turbo is probably not "closed" enough at low revs to generate the necessary low down power, but is working fine at the top-end.

A log of group 11 in the engine module on VCDS would highlight this.  A large gap between requested and specified at low revs, and also a poor duty cycle.

Who set up the turbo and did the mapping? As above it does sound like it's not been done right going off the issues you describe with the power delivery, that's if nothing else mechanical and/or electrical is wrong. I wouldn't go tinkering about with the actuator either unless you know what your doing. Get a pro on the job!

I'm thinking my self now the turbo isn't setup correctly but would i still get really bad mpg?, as for remapping  i don't know but i have a receipt of 400 pound for the turbo from 2013, its a recon of ebay .

ill give it a few minor adjustments and see if it improves if it doesn't ill see a pro lol.

ohhh and i did notice while getting some vacuum readings with my mity vac the egr hose from the vacuum box provided 0 hg even if left for 10 / 15 mins as the actuator hose was a stable 19 inhg at idle

Logs are needed. Group 11 from 1500rpm to 4500rpm at wide open throttle in 3rd.

To check the stop screw you need the licensed version of VCDS lite. For this go into engine ecu then basic settings. Choose group 11 and go. Rpm will increase to 1400rpm then the actuator will go from open to closed. Log this. In the log look at the actual pressure when opened and again at closed and measure the difference. Stock turbo is around 120-150mbar difference. GTB turbos around 90mbar.

i have noticed when the bonnet was open yesterday there's a cloud of black smoke,  more noticeable on cold starts.

I decided to have a  look with a mirror while my son revved it, and it seems to be coming from the turbo manifold, the back middle of the inlet manifold is cooked in soot from the turbo, i did think it was the egr blanking plate but you can clearly see it throwing out black soot from the top of the turbo.

could this cause a lack of power?

deffo get a new gasket on her!

well my problem is now fixed!

pretty sure it was my map sensor i  fitted a spare one i had today.

other things changed today, coolant temp sensor, thermostat, anti freeze, air filter, turbo manifold gasket, down pipe gasket, inlet manifold gasket.

as for the brakes they still do it. i cant seem to find any vac leaks via the servo, mity vac shows no leaks unless the braking system is at fault.

only headache i have now is getting the air out of my coolant, getting warm air for about 15 seconds from the heaters :(

Check the NRV on the brake servo vacuum line, it could well be stuck open.

does everything look normal?
