Using a TV as a PC monitor

Featured Replies

Is there a way that this can be done?

I've tried it a few times before like plugging my laptop into the tv but the picture quality was ghastly and not worth a w**k.

I think its to do with the resolution and/or the refresh rate.

I think its done via an s-video connection, havent tried it for ages due to the above

I have a dedicated pc for my TV in the living room. It uses an s-video connection from the pc which is better than composite video but it still sucks for picture quailty. I have to run at 640x480 and increase all the font sizes just to read web pages and that's on a 28" widescreen.

Best bet is to get an LCD or Plasma TV and use the DVI or RGB connection. Otherwise you are wasting your time.

Or a decent projector, they aren't bad and are a piece of cake to hook up to the pc albeit expensive

Image is sweet on my 32" Hitachi plasma. Dedicated PC input

If you have a high-res plasma or LCD it is usually ok, but you have to make sure you have a video card that drives it at the optimal resolution for the screen. A standard screen has terrible resolution, but you can use it. Don't expect a great picture though.

Aye - a standard screen should be ok for moving video, but you'll need a hi-res screen if you want to actually "use" Windows.

i have my pc through an old tosh 21" at the mo and the pic for vid is great screen res is set at 720x576 (dvd resolution) also its running high definition quite well too :D text is ****e but who cares

There's apps available to pretty much create any resolution needed, though the name of the most popular one escapes me now - Its often discusses in the HCPC section of AVForums.com.

It really depends what you want to do though; if you want to use it for something that needs loads of detail, or indeed just run regular Windows then I'd forget it. If you want to run a proper front-end on the PC, such as "MyHTPC" and play videos, pictures, music on there then it'll be fine.

power strip??

Quite possibly!

Though I'm sure I've used another, but can't for the life of me remember. I'm gonna have to dig it out now....

there is another called tv tool
