Keeping a car clean?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I am in need of some advice. I know some of this has probably already been covered before, but I cannot seem to get my head around the vast array of cleaning products that are available. Previously, for my old car, I would normally just wash and dry it and that would be it, however, I have just picked up my brand new superb and I want to keep it gleaming.

The AutoGlym products seem to get a decent review so I was thinking of purchasing the following:

  • AutoGlym Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner
  • AutoGlym Super Resin Polish
  • AutoGylm Extra Gloss Protection
  • AutoGylm Car Glass Polish
  • AutoGylm Wheel cleaner

My question is, will above polish and gloss protection protect the paint etc? Also, Sonax XBD keeps cropping up on the forum for that "Must have" product to give the paint work that extra protection. Could this / can this be used with both the above polish and gloss protection? Or do I ditch the gloss protection and only use the super resin polish with the Sonax?? Can all three be used together?

I can get all the above in an AutoGlym kit plus extras such as wheel cleaner, interior & vinyl cleaner plus a polishing cloth for an excellent price.

Any advice is much appreciated!!

I use Autoglym High definition Wax on my car and I think it looks great in the rain.

As far as I understand BSD isn't as good for beading as HD wax, but is better as far as protection goes. So that would be a personal choice as to what sort of look you're after and how often you want to wash it. Also, not for my benefit, but to help others out, what colour is your car?

There are lots and lots of products to choose from. I am sure sooner or later one of our resident detailing experts will be along and give some good advice.

Hers's my 10p worth.

1. Use megs gold class shampoo - 2 bucket method with a lambswool mit.

2. A decent alloy wheel brush with with a wheel cleaner such as wonder wheels hot wheels (this may only be required for the first clean if you keep up to them with BSD)

3. Get some meguirs scratch X 2.0. Use this to polish out any scratches / swirls.

4. Buy some collinite 845 wax(liquid) or fusso soft 99 wax(solid). Use this as the protection stage.

5. Buy sonax BSD. Use on top of 845 and on alloys.

6. Clean windows with Autoglym fast glass (my preference only - there are better ones out there)

7. Seal windows with RainX or similar.

8. Dress tyres with Meguiars tyre endurance tyre gel.

This will keep the car looking nice for a long time to come.

Keep it coming guys. This is great advice.. I like the idea of the two bucket method. I will be using that from now on!

The Sonax BSD seems to be the stuff the finish the car off so I will get a bottle of that.

What about the AG Shampoo, Super Resin and GLoss protection. The reason I keep going back to this is because I can get it in a complete kit a great price. Will the Sonax work its wonders if I apply it to the car after applying the above.

Radders' advice is spot on

AG Shampoo is ok

AGSRP is ok too but I havent used it in years....its a cleaner polish with a small amount of sealant and lots of filler to hide swirl marks

AGEG Protection is very very poor and lasts about one wash!!

Apply BSD after youve polished the car or applied a wax and it will last you all winter if you reapply every month or every 3 or 4 washes

its superb on alloys too

Use the product I suggest and you won't got far wrong. The shampoo is ok, but IMO megs gold class is better, much slicker. Many detailers have SRP in their arsenal as it is an AIO product. However it does not last that long as is the case with EGP, use one of the waxes I suggested.

Spot on. Thanks guys. Much appreciated.

I will have a look for the Megs gold class shampoo and collinite 845 wax(liquid) then.

How do I go about applying the Collinite 845? The 'industrial use' stamped on the bottle is scaring me off. Can I still apply by hand for rubbing or buffing?

As above SRP is more suited for cars with paint imperfections so there's not much point using it on a new car. If your sold on AG products high dev wax is very good and lasts up to 6 months. The downside is its expensive but you use so little it lasts for ages. Top up with bsd as Chris suggests and it should see you through the winter. Which ever sealer/polish you use making sure its clean before you apply has a direct effect on how long it will last. I used ag high dev cleaner this time. Very easy to use and got the surface really clean using it by hand. I'd invest in a nilfisk jetwash, get a autobrite snowfoam lance and some valetpro ph neutral snowfoam and a dooka lambswool washpad to go with your 2 buckets if you want to minimise damaging you car each wash.

Thanks!

I think I am getting there. This is what I have decided on so far:

  1. Meguirs Gold Class Shampoo

  2. ?? ( Do I need to get a polish or something else which I apply to the car before applying the Collinite 845?) Littleade? Would this be the AG High Dev cleaner?? Chris?? Radders??

  3. Collinite 845 Wax (Fluid)

  4. Sonax BSD

Apologies if I am being dumb! This is a new area for me...

A cleaner polish will help prep the paint giving the LSP(wax or sealant) the best chance at longevity.  If you have the time and budget also look at decontamination with a tar remover and then fallout remover and clay or clay mitt/cloth.

Halfords though much maligned do some reasonable products on 3 for 2 if you forget something, or even ECP with free delivery if you aren't in a rush.

For a cleaner polish and before the collinite , what would you recommend?

Not sure I would be taking my recommendation, still a relative(ish) newb.

But joking apart i happened to be in the Autobrite shop and Mark recommended liquid gold which seemed to do a decent job.  Lime prime lite was one of the recommendations i was given when i asked though ive never used it.

Probably best to firm up the rest of your order and ask for a recommendation from whoever you end up buying from.

Thanks!

If there are any scratches or swirls (if you are doing it by hand - small areas) I would use meguiars scratch x 2.0 before applying the collinite. the 845 is very easy to apply - you won't have any problems with this product.

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/330823-collinite-845/

For the first use stand it in warm water for a while then shake vigorously and apply sparingly. Lime prime is not a bad shout or you could just use some diluted IPA/water 50:50 mix to wipe panels before applying collinite. Then top off with BSD.

Don't forget to dress the tyres with Meguiars tyre endurance tyre gel. I love this stuff as you don't get any fling as you do with other stuff and it actually last more than 1 day unlike some other products.

Also now you had all this advice we will need to see pictures of the motor looking all lovely and clean.

Thanks Radders!!

All good advice from the guys on here, 845 is a great product, just wondering why you chose this over other products?

If you have a DA apply the 845 with it, makes it a bit more fun, faster and imo better results.

Enjoy!

Agree!!

Decided to go for the 845 because the above recommended it. ;)

I was all for AutoGlym but the above products that have been recommended seem to be popping up with good reviews / results!

DA??

845 chosen as its easy to work with, low dust, good results and long lasting. Product is not too expensive and a bottle lasts for ages. Yeah if you find you enjoy cleaning your car then a DA is a sensible choice and would make a nice XMAS present from someone.

Dual Action polisher.

Yep nothing wrong with 845 I'm a big fan.

Ah!

Sounds like you are on top of things with decent products and routine!

Looking forward to seeing some pictures of the fully detailed car and your thoughts on the products used.  :)
