10000 miles in my petrol vrs

Featured Replies

Awesome. Originally ordered the deisel but due to a rediculous delivery delay ended up with the ex demo from bickerton here in Sheffield.

I'd been concerned about the particulate filter on the deisel as I only do three miles to work most days.

Having used the petrol I doubt I'd ever go back. It's so smooooooooth and silky and quiet. Thirsty, yes, round Sheffield it can be as little as 18mpg but mostly mid twenties. On a run, motorway and mountains down to welsh Wales forty to the gallon.

The car has had two faults, one is to be sorted in a couple of weeks but the other done within a week of the report. High pitch, electronic, noise. It only came on when hot and was not speed sensitive. Turns out is was the water pump! It has an electronic clutch! Anyhow done in a day and under warranty. The other is the rear wiper motor.

I bought winter tyres which were used last year and are going on again in a couple of weeks. The standard fit ones have been brilliant very little slip unless really pushing the acceleration. Neither sets have worn badly and look like they have another ten or more thousand miles in them.

As for the car and it's ability, it is amazing. The headlights are superb, the fact they turn into the corners makes country driving safer and quicker. The auto wipers and auto lights were not features I thought I'd use but them along with the auto heating they are turned on all the time.

The boost heater was used to great effect in the winter and defrosted the car incredibly quickly, an advantage of the electronic water pump allowing the car to heat up quickly.

The car handles brilliantly, it's a touch twitchy when REALLY accelerating, but be smooth and quick and it reduces travel times! The inside wheel braking during turning reduces and almost eliminates under steer and does its thing with no fuss at all. The brakes are bonkers, fantastically smooth and hugely powerful.

The car is comfortable and the drivers seat is supportive and yet comfortable even for a 16.5 stone svelte human like me! I had three rugby players in the back averaging six two and seventeen stone and two similar in the front and the car swallowed us all up with leg room to spare in the rear.

The boot is superb and takes all the associated stuff that a young, active family and dog needs. All the little cubby holes keep everything tidy and rattle free.

Negatives, it likes the fuel! I could be lighter on the right foot but I wouldn't smile as much. The shiny trim on the dash catches the sunlight which is distracting on a sunny day. The pause brake, for hill starts, is brilliant except when reversing up hill as it stops you dropping the car forward without changing gear which then means its rolls forward too quickly. Once you're used to it there's nothing to it.

All in all I love it, I seriously doubt it go back to a deisel, I'll never go back to normal headlights and I think I'm addicted to that engine. Would I have another? Yes. Would I want a rs 6? No.

Interesting and informative write up, but why compare an Octavia vRS with an Audi RS6? They're completely different and are aimed at two totally different markets.

If I could afford the sort of money an RS6 costs, then it would be very (very) high up on my list, but a vRS wouldn't even be on that list in the first place!

Always dangerous comparing the VRS to an RS6 as not doubt most will misinterpret where you are coming from.  :D I didn't,..

I've done 18k miles so far in mine and have managed 50.3mpg on a trip from Bournemouth to Manchester, well chuffed, long term average is 40mpg, however it is one of those cars that is so easy to enjoy and when I do, the mpg does drop

I only run mine on 99 ron fuel and may treat myself to the 320bhp 381flbt APR map next year

It is a great car, as an all rounder just second to none.

If they ever do a VRS R with haldex, that would be on my list with an uprated remap and turbo, should give the RS6 a run for it's money, only of course if its like that chap what has a Seat Leon cupra with Haldex and the VRS R is running 500bhp  :D

Sorry jlwah, the comparison was for a middle aged man with family having a fast ish car. I have for years wanted an rs6, but in all honesty the vrs is perfect for me now. 4 x 4 would make an excellent car superb, I think.

Oh and I doubt I could insure an rs6 for 250 fully comp!

long term average is 40mpg

For a 220 (240?) hp car this is hard to believe.

I get around 50 on mine.

Nice write up, I'm almost at 10k on mine as well and its fantastic.

Toni8b, its easily doable, check my fuelly stats below i have the 220 tsi as well it is possible providing your motorway travelling and keeping the right foot steady.

+1 on the above - bit like comparing the girl next door to Kylie....... both very nice but........

Fuel economy is so subjective to the area travelled in most. The first quarter of. Mile of my journey to work includes a descent of nearly 45 degrees and then an incline slightly steeper. Welcome Sheffield! My wife's family live in rural Wales and early on in the ownership I thought if we lived there I'd have a deisel but in all honesty the roads are smooth and flow well and the tsi does forty ish when we're there, seemingly better when pushing on!

I can see the Kyle analogy, I can also claim to like the girl next door as she doesn't come with paparazzi and other people wanting a piece. If I won the lottery I'd try an rs but it'd have to be amazing, other worldly, to tempt me away from the vrs.

It would probably cost the same to run as Kylie too! This just might whet your appetite if I've managed to copy the link. It now 'only' has a V8 rather than a V10 though but is apparently better. It would have to be de badged though.

Scarlett Johansson's neighbour says he doesn't understand your analogy ;)
