Grey Brake Drums

Featured Replies

After receiving delivery of my Black Edition a few weeks ago, I have asked myself, "who on earth decided to paint the drums in grey primer?"

So I got fed up of looking at them, I bought a tin of Halfords VHT Metallic Black paint and set to them.

As it only requires to removal of the wheel and a T30 bolt, it is a simple task (Be aware, to remove the drum, the handbrake will have to be released. Ensure that the vehicle wheels are chocked to prevent the car moving and falling off the jack). When off, it was evident that rust was setting in, some ten minutes of effort with some Scotch Brite, and a few coats of paint, a contrasting result!

Anyone else done different?

Had the drums on my Fabia Monte Carlo painted black as soon as I could!

Thought about black but went for the Halfords paint! Such a poor decision of Skoda to send new cars out with primer paint visible!

Grey is good colour if wheels are grey. With black wheels they looked a bit odd at first, but doesn't really bother me. After 15 months no rust at all.

I thought the grey drums and silver/grey wheel bolt covers looked bloody awful. I used a gloss black paint for the drums and got some gloss black wheel bolt covers for the wheels. Couldn't get the gloss ones for the locking wheel nuts so got four Matt black ones from an Audi dealer and got some 3m gloss vinyl wrap off eBay for £1.99 and covered the covers with wrap. Matches perfectly and no grey just black .

I got 1st Citigo in 2012 and painted drums with Hammerite black paint, after 2 years they were as good as new.

Got another Citigo 4 weeks ago and painted drums straight away, also got wheel arch liners and it kills the noise of rain spray

Alistair, are the wheel arch liners easy to fit?  I'm shortly picking up a Monte Carlo and would like to do this at the same time as drums.

Thanks

Hi turboman

There is fitting guide in technical guide section of site.

The holes are already there but are covered by paper discs at factory and then undersealed.

When you get the liners and adapters they have holes already drilled in liners.

First you swap the black plastic caps in front of wheel arches the first hole is on that and if you offer up the liner in place and poke around with a small headed screwdriver you feel give where the holes are.

These holes are square in shape so gently cut or scrape away the sealer.

You then push in the insert plugs then srew in the Torx bolts.

The liners and adapters have to be ordered from vw dealer apparently

My dealer fitted them free of charge, they make a huge difference especially on wet roads but even in the dry it is quieter.

The technical guide shows photos for fitting plus the part numbers

Good luck

All the screws etc are on Skodas database but not the 2 liners.
