Corroded front brake discs

Featured Replies

Hi,

My first post and I'm looking for some advice.

I bought a ex demo Fabia 1.4 TDI in March with 4000 miles. I haven't driven it much in the past 6 months - just about 1000 miles and it has on occasion sat for a week or two without being driven. I brought it in for it's first service last week and was told that the front brake discs were very corroded and need to be replaced, and that this was a result of the low mileage. Brake disc corrosion isn't covered by the warranty but the dealer suggested I try Skoda Customer Care to see if they could do anything for me. They came back with a no.

Assuming that the discs were fine when I got the car (I am not very mechanically useful and wouldn't have known how to check) is it reasonable that they could get so bad after 6 months that they would need to be replaced?

The dealer has quoted me

Personally, I'd get a 2nd opinion. If the brakes were fine 6 months ago, I can't see them getting that corroded to the point of needing replacing! Maybe if you can take the wheel off and take a picture of them, the techies on here can give you an opinion :)

Another option is to just use the brakes for a bit, see if that cleans off the cr@p - I know it's going to be worse than 'post-washing-the-car' but generally brakes clean off pretty sharpishly if you do a few accelerate/braking sessions on a quiet road.

Brake discs are bare steel they is gonna rust if not used.

Give them a while and see if the clean up with a good bit of useage, however brakes dont work to well when they are covered in rust.

Thanks folks,

I'm going for a week's holiday in Scotland with the car and should be using it quite a bit. I'll see how it goes and get a second opinion on it when I get back.
