Buying octavia 1,4 tsi or 1,9 tdi

Featured Replies

I am not shure what to look for. I will probably be doing around 6000 miles per year of mostly city driving, so what should be best suited for me - 1,4TSI or 1,9TDI?

Of course, I am thinking of used car from 2008-2009

Probably the tsi. It'll warm up quicker and has decent low end torque and is smoother and quiter than the 1.9 tdi. The tdi will be noisier and with less rev range is more of a pain round town than the tsi. I had the 1.4 tsi Octy and the wife has a 1.9pd seat Altea and for your type of driving the 1.4 is far better IMO, but to be sure you need to test drive both if you can. The tdi will be better on fuel, but probably not by enough to make it important. I used to get about 44 mpg from my tsi.

I second this go for the 1.4 tsi if doing short city driving it takes the 1.9 about 5 miles before it gets warm

I'd say given your colder climate and lower mileage then go for the 1.4 tsi.

The 1.9 tdi is fine but I wouldn't want one with a manual gearbox.

The 1.9 would need an auxiliary heater but I reckon you would get away without one on the 1.4. I think you would be getting warm air after about a mile if not less.

If the 1.9 is new enough to have a DPF then don't touch it for that kind of driving. If it doesn't have a DPF, then I'd still go for the petrol for that low a mileage per year.

The 1.9 didn't have a DPF in the Octavia.

I'd still go for the 1.4 though.

Fair enough.

Me too.

And with that I'm not saying the 1.9 is bad. I love mine to bits (never driven a manual PD105 though so can't fully comment) especially with the DSG.

If I were doing fewer miles a year I would probably have a petrol.

It's also down to preference. We are right on the cusp of not realy needing a diesel (only do about 12,000 a year with a lot of town driving) but we prefer diesels, their extra pulling power and being able to do nearly 700 miles to a tank on a run.

I have the 1.9Tdi 105 with a 6-speed manual and I find it great, First gear is a little on the short side, but other than that its a joy to use, slick and precise.

But ultimately its your choice, I only cover around 8-10K miles a year but I prefer to drive a Diesel. :notme:

I don't think they did an Octavia with the PD105 and a 6 speed gearbox. Pretty sure just a 5 speed so the experience maybe different I'm not sure.

1st gear is very short on the 6 speed DSG too.
