Warped Discs

Featured Replies

Hmm, something strange is afoot in the brake dept.

Last night on a couple of occasions I had to brake rather hard from high speed for some unknown reason. As I did I noticed a vibration under foot and on the odd occasion the steering wheel shock. :(

Has anyone else had this problem?

Could warped discs be the problem?

Des

Assuming that wasn't ABS kicking in then it could be either wapred disks or the wheels need balancing

Pad knock off.

Had this with some EBC reds that I was trying out, went away once they got hot or if I really used the brakes. Was a bit concerned at first, but spoke to some brake people and they explained what it was.

I doubt you've warped them (although you may have) as I haven't managed it yet, even running hyper aggressive DS3000 (they make the DS2500 feel like standard ones :D)

Jon,

You know the setup I have, they did get a tad warm on the RPM weekend so just wondering. Still stops fine and only happens sometimes, not a nice feeling all the same.

Cheers mate

Dr,

Had 4 P-Zero's fitted yesterday but problems started before then, just thought i'd warm them up last night all in the name of research of course. :D

In my experience which isnt that great warped discs tend to show up mostly under gentle brakeing & the vibration will disapear when you brake hard unless they are badly warped in which case they vibrate all the time

The dealer replaced the discs once on the L&K due to vibration. The problem apeared to be coming back with the new discs but a few 100-0 stops cured it so I guess it was pad deposits on the disc.

One person has told me that aparently if you hold the car still on the footbrake whilst the discs are hot some pad deposits can be left at one point on the disc & this will cause a vibration next time you brake until the surface is cleaned. So based on that sugest you try a couple more hard stops but let the brake off as you stop, this should clean the disc & eliminate that one.

Tyres need breaking in as well, they normally need a few hundred miles to settle in, not thrashed the same day still I guess you can afford it !!

Des - had similar prob... but mine was not the discs.... another post rpm casualty ... the pads had over heated and broken up might be worth checking?

Stuart,

Drove on the tyres all the way back from Plymouth yesterday before blast last night, I'm not that daft ;).......well sometimes I am. :D

Des, 2500s will take serious abuse, as will the disks. I really would be surprised if they have warped. As I said, I really have given my a pasting and have had no trouble, maybe you are unlucky, but I doubt it. Still reckon its pad knock off.

  • 4 weeks later...

I have had warped discs on my Octavia a total of 4 times:

- replaced at 20k miles under warranty

- replaced at 30k miles under warranty

- replaced at 50k miles at my expense

The latest set (non Skoda as advised by Merritts Skoda, Aylesbury) are also warping (now 54K miles)

Not sure why they keep on warping. I generally brake gently. Someone suggested this is the problem. Is that true?

Does anyone else have this problem? My Octavia is a 1999 GLX Tdi (90bhp)

Do you keep your foot on the brake when stopping for traffic lights, etc?

The second set of disks on our L&K apeared to be warping so we gave the brakes a real work out over a weekend (lots of ABS) & hey presto they were OK, that was about4000 miles ago so now from time to time we give it a work out.

Gentle braking may be your problem, It might be worth getting some different pads that better suit your driving style as your problem may be pad deposits.

I have also been told not to hold the car on the footbrake when stationary as this can put pad deposits on the disc

Take a read of http://www.stoptech.com/whitepapers...rotors_myth.htm

Im no expert on Brakes, just my thoughts

Stuart

I don't keep my foot on the brake at lights.

I will try the harder braking to see if that helps. I'd be interested to see the URL, but it didn't all come through - it was truncated.

Turns out Des's brake discs aren't warped, it was pad related.
