anyone rebuilding Fabia mk1 3cyl azq engine ?

Featured Replies

Three years ago I got a 2003 Fabia as a non runner, engine parts in the boot etc. I thought that I would buy another engine (second hand) and slot it in. I found it difficult to source an engine and when I did - they were expensive. I came across three engines that were rebuilt and never ran again !!  I bought one of those as at least the bottom half was okay, it did have bent valves. The original engine had a hole in one piston.

I was fortunate enough to get the tools required to set the crank and cam's from a local Seat dealer for a few hours, I would have struggled without them. A friend of mine called, I pointed out the spring on the shoe tensioner as I judged it inadequate , he (Davy) explained the spring was only to hold it in place until the oil pressure built up. Bingo !!   I think that maybe the reason the rebuilt engines were not running. Being 3cylinder they may be more prone to backfire before the oil pressure built up enough to tension the chain ??    Here I believe is the important bit.   REMOVE the spark plugs before firing up the engine. Crank it over until the oil light goes out, replace the plugs , and hopefully - away you go. Hope this helps someone.
