URGENT advice needed Unleaded in the furby

Featured Replies

Missus did it to our Octy TDI about 6 weeks ago, 10 litres of unleaded into about 7 litres of diesel. Luckily I noticed the till receipt on the way out of the garage and pulled into my parents driveway about 400 yrds from the garage and switched off.

Luckily I did not drive it until it conked out, so I got away with syphoning the tank and draining the fuel lines/filter.I believe the best way to get all the contaminated fuel out is to unscrew the sender unit from the tank (located under the rear seat cushion in the octy) and bale out the fuel. I still had about 3 litres worth of unleaded in the tank so I brimmed the tank with fresh diesel ..(this gave me a 52 to 3 ratio of diesel to unleaded...5.75%) and the engine fired up first time..

I ran this 'mix' through as fast as possible , without refilling the tank in order to reduce the amount of time the fuel lines/injector seals/filter/pump etc would be exposed to petrol and also used a cetane booster to help negate any pinking from the petrol

...funnily enough the car ran quieter, revved smoother, had a bit more 'pull' at the low end and was more economical (moved my urban mpg from 52 to 55 mpg over a 600 mile tankful)

As a result of this 'incident' I fill up the car and she pays for it.....

Unfortunately if SWMBO has run the car till it stopped, there may be damaged to the injector seals, fuel filter and possibly the injector pump ( don't think your PD has one anyway)

In my (unqualified) opinion, in this case you need to at least get the 'petrol' out of the fuel system asap to prevent damage to the seals, replace the fuel filter and flush out all the fuel system. fingers crossed you might be lucky and no injectors damage has occured.

Good luck

Does it come with a full tank of fuel?

so, will my warrenty now be in danger of being void

especially as i am using my skoda aa cover to have the car towed???????

Mike,

My brother recently filled up our X3 diesel with unleaded and drove it till it conked out. The damage was estimated at

I filled a Diesel Citroen with Petrol & drove it until it stopped, about 6-7 miles. Panicked like **** had loads of horror stories, Got it recovered to a local garage, they said there were lots of potential problems but they advised initially drain it, change the filters & bleed it through as starting it wouldnt do any more damage to anything already damaged. Sold the car 3 years later & never had a single problem.

I was told that because I had put about3/4 of a tank of Petrol in the car had stopped once the diesel in the system had run through, if you have a lot of Diesel still in the system the car runs on & thats when the damage is caused aparently.

I would guess you are probably going to be 150-200 quid lighter but otherwise OK so dont panic until you know.

If youve taken it to a Skoda main dealer then they will probably want to replace anything that might be damaged to cover the warranty angle but cross that bridge when you get to it.

From what I recall with the VAG TDi (don't know if it applies to PD) the fuel system recirculates any fuel not immediately needed by the injector pump straight back the fuel tank..and constantly circulates fuel from the tank around the system and back again until the high pressure pump ' asks' for more...the 'pure' diesel in the lines will probably have been purged pretty quickly and the engine will be running on the 'pure diesel' in the injector pump ...perhaps why the engine will run okay for 3 or 4 miles before dying as contaminated fuel gradually gets fed into the pump...but the PD is probably different again...

I work for a hire car company and we've had a few of these, not in a furby but we have had them in Touran Tdi's and in new golf 2.0 GT Tdi's

In all cases it hasn't been too bad normally around

Just lots of smoke :D I know I accidently filled my C to the Brim with BP Ultimate Diesel  (Fricking pumps look exactly the same as Ultimate Unleaded)

Syphoned most of it out' date=' BTW Diesel tast horrid :sour: Filled it full with Petrol, off she went! Smoked a bit but not too much![/quote']

funny u bring up BP!! lol, i went to fill up 2days ago and i did read...but they moved the pumps around...green was diesle and black was unleaded!!! shocking..i had to look like 4 times to understand oooooohh i get it! grr!! my dads done it before in his car but diesle in a petrol!

Cheers for the advice everyone, I took it to my mates garage today, wont know till tomorrow if its alright.

Been told various things of some other people, nothing new to whats been said already on here really.

Apparently in a very few cases the damage could be up to 5000 quid but this is because the mixture of diesel keeps the car going and helping to feed the petrol round the system for longer causing more damage but in my case there was no diesel left in the car so it cut out straight away keeping damage to a minimum (HOPEFULLY). Not sure if any of this it true.

Various other people have said otherwise, but i like the above because it costs the least!!!!!!! :D

I'll let you know tomorrow if it starts ok

Trust me, you will be just fine.

I work for Tesco, and often work in the petrol station... Its only a small one (6 pumps) - on New Years day I did a 12 hour shift, and 4 people filled their diesels with unleaded. A common mistake...

I think its pretty tricky to fill a petrol with diesel due the the nozzle size - could be talking pants though.

Don't worry about it, it really is common. I dare say little damage has been done, might sting you for a couple of hundred quid, but heck - who cares. ;)

I'm always paranoid at the petrol station - there really should be consistancy with colours for different fuels - Tesco now do a blue pump for bio-diesel...

Same should go for milk bottle tops/carton tops, and for crisps. Green is for salt and vinegar, not cheesy bunion... muppets. :finger:

WRONG! Green is for Cheese and Onion and blue is Salt and Vinegar!!!!

On more than one occasion I have been looking forward to a nice pack of Salt'n'Lineker!! and had my taste buds assasinated by the vile horribleness that is Cheese'n'onion :(

total cost was a whopping 70 quid, skoda wanted 250!!!!!

  • 2 weeks later...

I had the unfortunate experience of putting 45Lts of unleaded in my Octavia 110. - a pretty stong mix!!

car conked out after abou a mile - right next to an independant garage that I have used in the past. He says he drains about 1 car a week and that very very few have further problems. I was considering changing to a 1.9 DSG anyway so I think i will just in case !!!

My mechanic used a neat trick to drain the tank - detatch the fuel line as it reaches the engine, place the air line from a foot pump in the tank and block the inlet as best as possible with a cloth, then simply pump and the pressure blow the fuel through!

I did put ultimate unleaded in my furby once (chose the wrong tint of blue-coloured pump nozzle  ). Fortunately wasn't too much of an issue - spotted the error about half tank full. Promptly switched and filled the rest with diesel. Ran fine except when starting from hot where the starter motor needed a few seconds before engine fired properly.

My old man did exactly the same to his Seat TDI Alhambra, only difference being fillinf it right up. Got half a mile down the road and it died. Cost about
