MPG from TDi 110, and blacksmoke remap

Featured Replies

All this remapping is all well and good but and its a big BUT have any of you improved the handling because mine TDI 110 Asv engined octy estate rolls quite badly on the twisty stuff, yes its great on the motorway and the other month we did a 400 mile trip at mid to high 80's and still got 47.6 mpg but if I want to throw it about I give up after a few corners and tell myself what a wonderful motorway cruiser it is!!!

have you done anything to the car?  lowered, etc?

on a previous thread, i asked if the vrs stuff would suit the tdi (engine weights etc) and i was advised that they are similar weights, so i dont see why you cant put vrs stuff on the tdi

also, are the anti roll bars different? cause they make the most difference in my opinion.

Big clue - You don't have to go into corners faster just because the engine has more torque.

Second Big Clue - Roll rate is not the same thing as handling. It can have an effect on ultimate grip levels, but handing is about under/oversteer balance and steering feedback.

It's well documented that the vRS has a heavier FARB than "normal" Octys, using different suspension pickups. That is actually why the vRS understeers more than the other models.

Personally i think the tyres play a big part. No point suping up the car and fitting hard ditch finders....

No I haven't done anythings it's as original as it comes, The amount of roll doesn't give me any confidence to throw it about to get anywhere near the edges of grip. It has Michelin Primacy tyres all round, so where would you suggest I could start to cut down on the roll and still retain the comfort for crusing? 3 out of 4 tyres are like brand new, when it is time to put new rubber on it what would you suggest? Bearing in mind it's a family estate and i don't want to throw a fortune at improving it

just noticed in another thread about an s3 lower brace - that might help tighten things up a bit

Strut braces, at best, reduce body flex. At worst, they lock in any distortion i nthe shell. They don't change wheel rates, which is where body roll mostly comes from.

There are 2 ways of increasing wheel rates, and 3 of increasing geometric roll stiffness, which is what you need to do to decrease body roll:-

1) Uprate the ARBs. A stiffer RARB is a popular modification on the vRS, but it comes as standard with a stiffer FARB and the same RARB as othe models (except 4x4 which has a completely different rear suspension), which builds in more understeer. The stiffer RARB acts to counter the understeer from the stiffer FARB.

2) Uprate the springs all round. This increases the wheel rates.

3) As (2), but lower the car. This lowers the centre of gravity, and hence increases the geometric roll stiffness, unless the roll centre moves below ground level, when you are left with no geometric roll stiffness, which can give you a rock-hard ride and more roll than standard!
