MPG from TDi 110, and blacksmoke remap

Featured Replies

Hiya

Ive only recently got my Octy, and was really impressed with the mpg - im often getting around 60mpg average, with some trips even reaching almost 70mpg.  (recent trip - heathrow to Manchester was 65mpg)

Now, after working out actual mpg, its seems im only getting around 50mpg - and 480 miles to a tank.

Is that correct?  Can the mpg gauge be that far out, and why am I using so much fuel if its not correct.

Also, would using SVO use more fuel then equivalent litres of diesel?  How much mpg would I loose if I went this way.

The car has also been mapped recently with a Blacksmoke remap - has anyone had any experience of these?  Im finding I don't get an urgency of boost, but the speed seems to climb ok - peoples opinions pls.

Cheers

Kaz

The average mpg readout (presuming you're looking at average mpg and not instantaneous. Have you had figures of several hundred mpg or ---.- on over-run? If so you're looking at instantaneous mpg) is notoriously optomistic. Having said that, 480m to a whole tank seems bad: Do you run it until you get the low fuel warning, and stop filling when the pump cutoff goes? If so, then you're using about 1.5 gallons less than the stated tank capacity.

Where is the 480 miles coming from? I'd get something similar this time of year from trip mileage plus available range, but living up here can be sore on fuel.

yep - im using the average readout.

I ran it until i got the fuel light on, and around 55miles left in the range.  It took 42.5 litres to refuel to 3 clicks of the pump.

the 50mpg is working out the 42.5 litres vs 480 miles = 51mpg

My old Octy 110 averaged 47mpg (brim to brim calcs) over the last 5K miles I had it, and did 46mpg over the first 5K. It did a lot of short journeys, so was never going to do particularly well at economy. The average figure was always optimistic, though usually in the upper 50's. 51 as an actual sounds reasonable, though if that's from longer runs it probably should be higher. ISTR the book figure was 53.5mpg for combined.

it was for a 3 hour motorway run x 2

I have kept a record on a brim to brim basis for the last 30,000 miles. The average is 45.4 mpg, with short term averages (still several tank fills) between 42 and 52 mpg. There is big difference between summer and winter and between short journeys and longer journeys - best is long fast A roads.

I had a 90hp Octavia and a 130hp Octavia from new to 80k and they both gave me around 47-52mpg on average.

What kind of speed were you doing on your motorway run?

51mpg does sound a little low.

We recently did Germany to York via Dover. 640miles and 54.25 mpg (calculated Dash showing 54mpg as I've calibrated it). And that's in a heavier car with an "auto" gearbox.

ok - so what can i do to make the gauge more accurate - at the moment, its around 15mpg out!

You can adjust it with VCDS.

It's in the instruments.

Basically you reset your trip computers after a refill. Then when you next fill up calculate your MPG.

In instruments go to adaptation then channel 003 consumption correction.

There will be a percentage there probably 100%.

You then calculate using:

current adaptation value * calculated mpg / trip computer mpg

Whatever the new value is (mine was 108) you put that into VCDS as the new value.

Job done!

i was doing 70-80 mph

That may have something to do with it. That extra 10mph can make a huge difference to fuel consumption.

my trip computer resets after each trip - is that correct?

There's a trip average and a long term average (that doesn't reset each trip). If you're using the latter, did you reset it?

when i scroll through the options, i dont get the long average - only the trip average with a number 1 by the side of it

I had a 110 and remapped it, and never looked back. 480 from a tank is the minimum I would have expected. Take it for a thrash to clean the pipes, a service, etc.

I remapped mine, then put bigger nozzles on the injectors and the car went like a rocket.... till the turbo blew up on it.

who did you use for the remap? which injectors did you go for, and did the consumption get any worse?

A single press of the reset button switches to the number 2 (long term) average figures.

Reset this one on a full fill up.

I used a blacksmoke remap, and have used them on many cars without issue.

The injectors i got Bosch ones, PM me and I will send details.

And the consumption readout improved, but in reality I think it stayed the same. Also the EGR blanking helped, although the car took longer to warm up.

You switch between trip average (1) and long term average (2) by briefly pressing the button on the underside of the wiper control arm which is marked Reset.

One tankful is not enough to get a long term average fuel consumption, as shown in the graph in post #6 which shows huge variability between refills even though it is brim to brim every time. I put this down different miles left in the tank and different cut off points on pumps.

I believe the "50 miles left" warning is calculated from the rate of fuel consumption just before the warning, so is inconsistent. And of course the miles will depend on the type of driving in that one tankful.

My car warns me of low fuel at either 25,30 or 35 miles left.

But does the light not come on once its reached a certain level? - i.e 7 litres left which is the reserve?  (taken from skoda manual - 55 litre tank, which includes 7 litre reserve)

I've had mine for 9 years, which is plenty long enough to say that the light comes on at an inconsistent available range, so it probably is at a fixed volume. However, since I've seen the available range go as low as 40 miles and never seen it be as high as 60 miles, it seems unlikely that the volume is as much as 7l (about 1.5 gallons, and I get a fairly consistent 45mpg commuting; better on leisure trips).

Mine is running a blacksmoke remap on standard injectors (ASV 110) and I get about 470-480 before light comes on.

I also often get high mpg figures on the trip readout (70+mpg) with an overall computer readout for the tank of around 61mpg so over reads by approximately 10 mpg.

Remap has improved performance pulls much better than standard 110 but fuel consumption remains the same as standard.

Would be interested to find out more about those larger Bosch injectors....

that sounds spot on like mine!

ive just ordered a few sets of the injectors and a few grill covers, so they will be up for sale when they arrive
