Central Locking Problems

Recommended Posts

Hi all newbie here, first skoda ever. I have a 2002 Octavia VRS

Ive looked on here for some help about my central locking but still cant make a dogs tale of it.

The problem I have is: Front Passenger door deadlocked and wont unlock whatsoever and the key fob only open drivers side rear door and boot, the key unlocks drivers door, drivers side rear door and boot. No interior light on any door apart from passenger rear and boot.

So in summary

Drivers Door:

Unlocks and locks with key only

Only opens with exterior handle
No interior light

Window works

Drivers Rear Door

Unlocks and locks with key and fob

No interior light

Window works

Front Passengers Door

Doesnt unlock at all

Window works

Rear Passenger Door

Manual locking and unlocking only

Interior light works

Window works

Boot

Unlocks and locks with key and fob

Boot light works

Wiper motor or squasher doesnt work

Any ideas on how to fix will be helpful.

The front drivers side door is probably the window motor/control module and /or door loom. Does the lights on buzzer work when you open the drivers door?

There is no buzzer sound. I've already replaced the window motor/regulator as the window did not move.

Does the led on the drivers door flash when locked with the key at a steady pulse?, The lack of interior lamp sounds like the o/s/f door lock mechanism microswitch has failed.

Unfortunately, the setup on these cars does not like water, so just hook the multi plugs off the drivers control unit to rule it out.

The smart people on here seal the connections with non conductive silicon grease whenever they disturb an electrical connection, as it is easier to do it then than when it corrodes later.

On the doors that don't unlock, do they unlock if you use the master switch on the drivers side inside the car?, if not do the affected doors make any sound like it's trying to work at all?.

Welcome to the forum, give us all a bit more info and i'm sure we'll sort you out. What sort of mileage is on the car?.

Phil.

No led light.

The light on the dashboard comes on if i leave the door on the catch.

If I disconnect the drivers multi plug what should happen?

The only door which unlocks with master switch is drivers passenger door and the boot. The is no sound from other doors when it is pressed.

Mileage is just under 110000 miles, only 2 previous owners.

If water has found its way into the control unit, as you take off the plug to the control unit, up to an eggcup full of water may run out of the control unit itself. I have to say I would start here as you have so many faults. Sometimes, the water damage can corrode away the pins between the control unit and the block. There was a thread on here with good piccies, I'll see if I can find it

Do you know anyone who has VCDS near you who could scan the car for faults at all.

To be honest, it may be quicker to get a member on here to scan your car so that you can work out what faults are related and which are not.

If you can't get to do this, then you will have to get a multi meter and progressively work back from the control unit to find where you are losing the signal.

The fact that you have no led or interior lamp on the drivers door does tend to point to the lock mech as one of your problems, and there is a sticky note at the top of this section which gives a lot of info and cures.

If you check things and post the results as you go, we can guide you in the appropriate direction.

You said no water was present at the connector, but what was the state of the pins on the unit and the socket on the loom?. any green corrosion at all or missing/bent pins at all?.

I would say that the chances are low, as that could also be a locking mechanism fault, A scan could see if you are getting an electrical communication with all the locks, if so, then the fault is likely to be in the mechanism, if not you get busy with the meter.

Members with VCDS are on a list in the VCDS section on here, unless someone volunteers first.

Sometimes giving the door a slap on the outer skin near the handle while operating the fob lets it release, if it does, get the trim off there and then before it locks again.

The door loom probably shagged as well.I had to replace both before everything worked as it should.

The MK1 Octavia along with other models on platform (Bora/MKiv Golf/Leon) all suffer from the door lock mechanism failing due to water ingress overtime and the contact points corroding and as mentioned the micro switches failing.

Its a time consuming job to replace them as there is one in each door. Its a full door card, inner skin and window mechanism out job. The parts new are about £110-140. My nice friendly specialist just did an o/s/r door for £170 on my Leon.

Typically the door(s) will start to stay locked or unlocked or play up sometimes they will sometimes they wont, the interior light staying on being a sign the door(s) is/are not locked.

VCDS should bring up fault code so as suggested find someone nearby with the map. I located someone when new on here and can confirm we are all a friendly bunch.

There are guides to repair the switches and re-solder the contacts but seeing as the work is the same as you have to remove the unit, for piece of mind I bought new as repair or second hand you don't know how long it will last.

As Im using mobile browser O can't see where you live so just in case my specialist is in Biggin Hill, Kent

Would the codes come up on the lite version of VCDS?

Yeah, that's alot of money just to get the door to open. I can buy the door mechs off of ebay for £20

I live in Fife, Scotland so youre a bit far away.

You can go that route, or see if anybody is breaking a vrs on here has a good one they would let go for you - I think devonutopia had a few a while back, but they may have all gone by now - worth a check by pm.

Get the system scanned first - vcds lite will pick up codes, but unless you register the version it's functions are reduced. You may need more than one item, so with the scan results you can do a one stop shop.
