Today I've mostly been driving...

A Fabia Bohemia Estate - 1.4TDi.

Hmmm - have to say, the seats are nice. They are the ones from the Sport, nice white stitching, but naff white inserts. Dead comfy though.

It also looks good in black with front fogs, nice 15" alloy, and the Bohemia badging is quite stylish. The leather steering wheel is nice, and the plush gear ****.

The engine is - imho - naff. Seems lacking in torque, makes a really horrible noise (3 pot) and is no more economical than the 1.9. Its also really unrefined , and a constant vibration at idle. Not really impressed - which suprised me after loving the 3 pot 1.2 so much! I hope its LOTS cheaper than the 1.9 TDi - otherwise its not justified imo. :thumbdwn:

The spec on paper is decent, but the little things have been skimped on. No electric mirrors, only 1 way interior light etc. Tis a shame.

The flexibility of the estate is great though, and only feels like a hatch to drive.

All in all - not a bad package.

There can't be many Fabia variants I haven't driven yet!

Anyone else got a Bohemia yet?

nope!!!!

Er.............................................No!

Bit unfair on the 1.4tdi comments. How many miles had the engine done? You need to do 10K in it before it loosens up and the performance improves.

My 1.4tdi has plenty of torque imho and I usually get around 64mpg on the drive to and from work. This engine is much better than the SDi. OK so it sounds a bit clackerty when pushed above 3000rpm, but i kind of like the noise it makes. Must be a better engine choice than the 1.4 16V 75bhp petrol in the Bohemia range?

I've just done 60,000 miles in my 53plate Fabia 1.4TDI and rekon the engine is a cracker!! Really nippy and sounds fantastic. (Before this I had a Seat Arosa 1.4TDI and did 60,000 in two years in that too.) Sounds very similar to the 1.2 petrol inb my experience but a little bit more so :-)) Also beats the crap out of it for performance.

OK guys, fair comments...

The engine was quite tight, but so was the 1.9TDi I test drove also. And don't forget I have had my vRS from new so I know what a tight engine is like.

I am not doubting whatsoever that the 1.4 TDi is better than the SDI and the 1.4 16v 75bhp petrol. However, on the journeys I did, I failed to see any benefits over the 1.9TDI - other than:

  • its lighter making the car more nimble.

Thats it. My feeling is that the 1.9TDI is more refined, more torquey and just as economical. So other than cost, I see no benefit to the 1.4TDI. This is not really knocking the 1.4TDI as such, more of a comparison to the 1.9TDI...

Why would you expect benefits over the 1.9?? It's a fair bit cheaper to buy and available with Classic spec when the 1.9 isn't. Fuel consumption is probably no better than the 1.9 (At least if I can compare it to a 110 TDI Passat which we used to have), but the noise is much more fun :-) and the performance is not far off.

I'd have hoped the engine to be quieter than the 1.9, which it isn't. Its also not as smooth. I'd also like to have seen much better economy, but it wasn't. And the performance is no where near as good as the 1.9.

All that aside, I didn't realise the massive price difference, and I think I was expecting too much. Its a cracking little engine!
