Fabia won't start :( ran out of ideas...

Featured Replies

Came out to my car yet again this morning after replacing glow plugs and the relay to it not starting again! But after I've flicked the ignition on and off a few times to get the glow plug light to show up it will start straight away? Ideas?

I'm at the point now where if I go out to it now turn the ignition on there will be no glow plug light which means it won't start :(

Have you checked for a live at the glow plug loom when it's switched on?

It's a very simple design, really so should be easy to narrow down the fault.

The only other thing that would be affected when your turning the key on and off cycling the ignition would be the fuel pump keep priming.

Have you changed your fuel filter by chance?

It sounds like the fuel pump only primes when the glow plug light comes on also? As I can hear something underneath... It's so strange! No I haven't changed the fuel filter

The gurgle type "psssh" noise is the fuel pump. You should hear it almost everytime you turn the key. It will stop after about three times once it's pressure is to high, but leave it for 10 minutes and it will make the noise again.

If you don't hear it everytime I'd imagine you either have a faulty pump or an electrical fault linking it back to the glow plugs.

The thing you can hear underneath is the fuel priming. ( when you turn ignition on, fuel pump pushes fuel to engine). Would be worth changing fuel filter as it may be struggling to feed enough. Fuel on start up if it's blocked.

Possibly the battery now - combination of colder weather plus some cranking over recent weeks if you've been having problems. Got a voltmeter/multimeter?

Battery's fine but would this all effect the glow plug light not coming on??

What's your starter motor like? I had a cdti that had the same problem. Would take ages to fire and countless turns of the ignition for the glow plugs did help. Turned out the starter motor wasn't turning fast enough to generate the compression or something. Anyways new starter and all was good.

Sorry just read your first post back and saw your glow plug light wasn't coming on :-/ just ignore this post

Try relay has a no 109 stamped on it.

It's the voltage supply relay for the ecu if it's faulty it will not supply current to relay no103 which is the glow plug relay.

Could be loom related. Was the part loom to the glow plugs replaced when new plugs fitted? Also, try a negative jump lead from "the block" to the battery negative terminal whilst you're trying things. Might help diagnose if there's an earthing problem.
