hello everyone.

I sent my 2002 fabia 1.4 into the garage today. I've been having trouble getting first gear, It will go into second and then into first so I thought it just needed a clutch. after the garage gave it a onceover they rang me and told me it needed a gearbox, a problem with this model. has anyone else come across this before

or is it time to dig deep.

Earl...

Nope.

Bad luck, sounds like you have a bent selector, these engines don't develope enough torque to eat clutches.

The gearboxes are ten a penny secondhand so no need to dig deep and the swap is quick and easy, get the garage to quote labour for the swap, it'll need fresh gearbox oil as well.

Had similar trouble with mine. I changed the gearbox oil and it helped quite a bit but it still sometimes needs putting into second before it will go into first from a standstill.

if it is a bent selector, whats the worst that could happen. eg will it just stop working or is their a chance that it may break in the gearbox.

thanks earl..

Not much, it's already unusable so it can't get any worse. Incidentally it might be worth changing the brake fluid since it's shared with the clutch and you might not be getting full de-clutching, top up the gearbox oil as well in case it's low. These are cheap fixes but not guaranteed to help.

Are you a pilot for Yorkshire Airlines by any chance?

I'm not going to argue with you, I'm just trying to help.

In any event I'm done here, good luck with it, no hard feelings  :D

Is it the 1.4 MPI?

I should have a gearbox going spare after this Friday if you're close (N Yorkshire covers a BIG slab of land :P) and want it...
