possible bearing noise from rear 1.9tdi 4x4 56 plate

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Got a nice humming noise coming from the back of my car at the moment, it changes pitch with speed. Also present when clutch in and coasting.

Am I correct in thinking that this is a rear bearing on its way out? Or could it be the Haldex?

It does seem to change when i go round different corners so I'm leaning toward the bearing needing replacement. Although I cant make out which one it is yet as I'm generally driving on my own - I do 600 miles a week minimum.

Had a quick check of my rear tyres at lunchtime, my drivers side one has considerably more wear on the inside edge than the passenger side.

Can anyone give me any info about the best (cheapest) option on getting spares for this?

Are the bearings pressed into the hub or do they bolt on?

Has anyone got a link to demonstrate replacement?

TIA.

I'd bet my house on the cause being sawtooth wear on the rear tyres and not a bearing...............especially as you mention uneven wear in the rear tyres

A new set of rear tyres and a proper 4 wheel alignment (on a hunter rig) will cure the problem.
