Fabia 1.4 8v MPI (2000) - Power steering goes off on right lock

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

My Fabia 1.4 MPI loses its PAS when turning the wheel full or nearly full right lock, when it happens you can feel the wheel transition over and when it transitions to no PAS there is a clunk. The PAS started going on and off quite randomly (left turns as well as right) a few months ago, I replaced the steering angle sensor and now it's significantly better, except full right lock, when it still goes off. When it goes off, it will stay off even when the wheel is centred, but then turning left or right again of a significant angle will make it 'clunk' and back into operation again.

The battery is old but has tested okay, and given the fact it only loses PAS when going right tells me there's something else the matter here. I checked the PAS fluid the first time it lost PAS and the level was fine. Any thoughts guys?

Many thanks

It sounds like the pressure bleed valve is sticking open, when the rack is at full lock it's supposed to short circuit the hydraulic pressure back to the reservoir to prevent the rack seals being damaged, I'm not sure you can access this since it's part of the rack itself.

Would that account for it only happening on full right lock and not left? I forgot to mention sometimes at low speed when first starting the car, the steering will clunk it's way through turning left or right but the PAS doesn't go off, it's like when it's cold the steering goes on and off randomly if I go nuts with turning it but only for a split second. Going off on full right lock then happens regardless of how long I've been going or how warm the engine is.

Thanks for the reply :) If that is the case I'd guess it would be a new rack? Which sounds like both a lot of money and a lot of work
