Octy vRS Gearbox woes!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

you may remember me form such threads as "how much for a rear diffuser" or even "it creaks when braking"

this is my latest and greatest yet though... I think my gearbox has bitten off more than it can chew!!! :(

I was returning form Cork (approx 300 mile round trip) when i noticed a slight grating/scuffing noise from up front, mainly under engine braking... thought it may have been a CV/driveshaft issue, no humming though...

Over the past couple of days the noise is louder and more frequent and twice I've had great difficulty getting it out of first after brisk acceleration out of a junction, i've had to stop and accelerate again to get it to shift... It has also crunched slightly on going into first maybe once or twice...

Im hoping its just a clutch issue but worst case senario its the box, so Im just wondering what are my options? car is out of warranty. I could stamp my feet for goodwill, only 32K on the clock. Failing that what other 2nd hand boxes will bolt on?

Cheers

Could be the dual mass flywheel, i have heard they give up but don't no wot sound it would make! If it's the gear box it'll cost ya 250yoyo's to remove and refit plus any parts that need replacing and labor! If ya need someone to look at it there's a good gear box mechanic in Celbridge!

Cheers Smithy, I'll do a search on flywheels..

I Trust There Is Oil In The Gearbox??

Must Be Very Unlucky If Clutch With So Little On The Clock Has Gone As These Should Last Between 50-100k Plus, Under Normalish Driving.

Well I was out with a mate last night for a second opionion, he builds rally cars for a living, for the locals he and his Dad look after Austin McHales motors...

Well he reckons it's a bearing on one of the internal shafts, its grumbling and the shaft has play in it which explains the locking in gear when accelerating, shaft moves and cant engage next gear, gearsjift also moves slightly when under load...

so I've rung the dealer, gearbox going after only 30K aint right IMHO, so Im off up to him on satuday morning to se what to do...

Shouldn't happen at 32k ,should it? Hiya Fergal BTW :)

Another update:

Went up to the dealer about 11.30 am Sat morning, had a quick word telling him about the prob, so we go for a spin, straight away he guns it down the road and bingo she jams in first and we have to coast to a halt, he then spends a few mins trying to release it, so I was happy with that, no more explaining needed... I told him in no uncertain terms that I wouldnt be happy handing over any cash to rectify the problem and hes 99% sure it'll be covered under goodwill... he reckons its the selector forks/pressureplate/flywheel... so im headin up tues eve and he's givin me a loaner, so hopefully by wed eve I'll know whats happening... he says they've never had a box out of a vRS... only 250K taxis!!!

Final update:

Well Skoda have finally seen sense and agreed to replace the lot free of charge...

so thats a new clutch, diff , reverse switch and a change of gearbox oil...

have to wait for the diff, approx 10-12 days :( no explanation of why it happened yet though?!?!

Result!

Nice to know that dealers can still do the right thing.....

Persistence pays off. :D
