Gearbox help please

Featured Replies

Hi I'm new to the forum and sorry for this being my first post. I bought a vrs with 150k miles on. It drives very nice when cold but once worm I struggle to get first gear and reverse. Once moving rest of the gears are normally ok, you have to pump the clutch a couple times to get it in gear and sometimes when hold the clutch down in first gear feel it catch itself and start moving forward even thow the clutch is down! Please can I get some advice cheers khan

Might be worth researching and performing the gear cables re-alignment process, before going down more serious paths of investigation.  Can't help myself as never had to run it before, just know it exists.

Try bleeding the clutch is easiest thing to try first, then if thats no good its new clutch time.

if it was clutch it would be like it warm or cold

try resetting gea cables and changing gearbox oil

Not sure how cable reset is done (that I first mentioned) but I think you have to use a tool to lock the gearstick in a certain position whilst it's done.

no it wouldn't, heat affects a clutch.

If it was gear cables it would do it hot or cold, as they are not affected by heat.

Gearbox oil won't cause the car to drive either when the clutch is depressed.

Yeah, a drill bit :p

It sounds like failing clutch hydraulics to me, I would expect to see a gradual loss of fluid from the reservoir, be very careful because once the fluid drops below a critical level you may lose the brakes as well.

If it's a failing slave cylinder you may as well replace it and the entire clutch and DMF at 150k, if it's the master cylinder or the pipe/hose then you can just replace them without touching the clutch.

Hi just an update, checked the fluid and that seems full, checked the gearbox oil that's full and clean! I heard something about a shim causing this issue so I have ordered that as it's cheap lol and the next thing will be the master cylinder. The gear cables have been checked and they are ok aswell. I have a feeling my car has a solid flywheel as it has a shudder when your in in a high gear and you accelerate. I might be wrong but it's just a long process at the moment
