Buying 2nd hand Superb - best time of year in UK

Featured Replies

So long time reader first time poster.

Going to sell me car privately come the new year and hoping to buy a 09/10/11 170 Elegance depending on condition, cost and mileage.

What I want to know is with the registrations of cars changing in March would there more likely be a better selection of 2nd hand superbs about then?

Any insights would be good.

Would be buying cash if that matters.

Last week in January is a good time in my opinion..

People are just getting over Christmas, credit card bills arriving, it's dark and gloomy.... Just the right time to kick em in the ****** if you know my meaning:)

Even more so when you have no px.

Yeah thought that about January. But doubt there would be many in that boat. Was thinking folks would be inclined to trade in for march

With the reg's changing twice a year wouldn't have thought it makes much difference nowadays. There is always a good stock of motors out there. just find the one right for you - whatever time of the year.

I would have thought December would be a better time, coming up to Christmas few people have thoughts on changing cars. Cash or credit doesmake a difference. if taking credit from the dealer you are more likely to get a better deal as the trader will make a turn out of the credit agreement.

The trader gets the cash from the credit company in the same way as if you hand it over but he doesn't get any hidden benefits from your cash.

Since something in the region of all cars, inc. Superbs, are sold new as Company cars, often with incentives from manufacturers / importers to buy away from the 2 peak months, the original registration date makes little difference to the original purchaser.

With this, and as the Zee says the twice yearly registration dates, it makes virtually no difference to the availability and price of a particular model what time of year you intend to buy.

(as an example mine was first registered, as a leased fleet car in November and replaced / sold on 3 years later, also in November)

BJM & The Zee thanks lads for the input.

Getting the NCT (Irish equivalent) of the mo done in January so will have the car up for sale then so good to buy from the end of January.

Hopefully get a superb in good nic with decent milage considering I'm going down the road of a dsg.

Fantastic 3.6 v6 4x4 Elegance twin door for sale on Autotrader low milage 3 years Old, think it was on offer at 11k. If i was After another car i would be off to have a Look.

Only problem is that would be €1,200 per annum road tax over here!!

As you appear to be selling as well as buying any benefit to waiting until a quiet time of year for buying will mean you'll struggle to sell.

Also if you are looking at 2009/2010/2011 models then these are all now out of manufacturers warranty so will depreciate far slower now.

The new facelift is well established now too so the effects of it's launch will have largely subsided now.

If you have time to spare I'd sit tight and wait until you find a perfect car, this will far outway any financial gains by waiting to find a cheap time of year to buy/sell.

Good luck!

yikes !!! That would put a Dent in your Pocket.

There is actually another higher tax band at €2,350 p.a. !!! Thankfully most TDi Superbs are €200 or less

According to the telly man Mike Brewer, December is a quiet time for dealers.
